Dropping to 1X

On my LG Optimus S I've dropped to 1X a few times. If I update PRL, this problem is immediately fixed and I'm back on 3G. Does anyone know why this is happening? My guess is I'm being dropped to 1X because I'm using a lot of data. Also is there a way to set my phone to try and reconnect to 3G every time it drops to 1X? It's inconvenient to have to manually update PRL every time I get dropped.

This is basically the only reason I haven't installed a custom ROM yet. I've read that with the custom ROM you cannot easily update PRL. So with a custom ROM I'd drop to 1X and then would have to just wait it out or hope a battery pull fixed it.

For the record I am using wireless tethering and have used quite a bit of data (I pay for unlimited, why not use it? Although that's for separate debate.)

PRL updating on custom ROMs works fine for me. I think its just gingerbread ROMs that have probs updating PRL, because they are basically hacked together (not official source from LG). You should give Reborn ROM a shot. I have used a lot of data with wireless tethering a few weeks ago and I never dropped to 1x unless I simply didn't have 3G where I was.

All I do, if it drop to 1x, i will just turn on airplane mode and then turn it back off! I am using data all day long. I think its just the system is not asbeing big as Verizon.(towers wise that it) or your in a area that has a weak data signal and not that you are using alot of data.

Thanks for the tips! I went ahead and put the Reborn Rom on my Optimus S and I'll keep in mind the other ways to reconnect.
