Dualshock 3 controller does not "click" on touch screen

I have successfully connected a standard Playstation Dualshock 3 controller to my standard Sony Xperia Z3. It is paired by Bluetooth and I can use the thumb pad or joystick to navigate the Android menu system for example. The circle button on the controller works as a Back button on Android.

However, the click button (it's meant to be X on the Dualshock controller) doesn't work as expected to "click" or perform a simulated touch on the screen. Everything else works fine. And on some menu buttons in some apps, press the X button actually does show the standard grey circles you get when actually pressing on the touch screen in Android. So it seems like it is very close to working. But the clicked buttons and similar navigation items will not activate. (This means it is useless for what I intended it for, which is for use with a Google Cardboard headset, where the phone is in the in headset and so you cannot press the screen.)

I am using Sony hardware and it appears to work for almost every purpose except the single most important button doing its only important job. I have searched and searched for an answer but everything I can find is about people having proplems pairing their Bluetooth controller in the first place; but this appears to work fine for me! Am I the only person in the world with this problem?
