I am now currently due for an upgrade on Verizon. I have a blackberry and am pretty much over them. I am torn 50/50 with getting a droid or the iphone. I really know nothing about droids but from what I've seen with others.. they put my phone to shame. What is the BEST phone currently out on VZW? Is it worth getting something tomorrow or within the next week or wait for something being released? I want the best phone on the market for VZW.. Thanks for the help.

P.S. - Does anyone know anything about VZW trial peroid? I don't want to get a phone and not like it and be stuck with it for the next 2 years.. Thanks.

I would wait a few weeks and see if the thunderbolt gets released next month it will be much better then any current Android phone on Verizon now. Also Motorola has the bionic coming out sometime after which will be another great device.

It all depends on what you are looking for. Of course since you are asking at AC, you will get biased answer towards Android, and honestly that is the best choice. Android is superior to iOS in every way except simplicity. I call the iPhone "the smartphone for dummies". It is simple to use, but lacks in capability. There is more to learn with Android, but in return, you get more capabilities, customization, and more options (devices, carriers, UI's). My advise is to wait for the iPhone and next gen Android phones to come out, go into a store and play with all of them. Get a hands on feel for both OS's and choose which one you prefer. I am confident you will choose Android, but to each his own.

Hope this helps.

A choice on smartphones can be difficult especially now with alot of choice on Verizon. There are some questions to ask yourself:
1. Do you want a keyboard? If so check out the Droid Pro or Droid 2.
2. What size phone are you comfortable holding? The high end Droids mostly have 4+ inch screens which makes for a larger form factor. That being said the bigger screen can be awesome for web surfing and reading but harder to carry all day.
3. How much do you like to customize your phone? The iphone is really easy to use but can be somewhat boring with just a row of icons page after page. Android pretty much let's you do whatever you want to personalize your phone with widgets, launchers and themes all to make your phone whatever you want.
4. The Apple app store has more apps than the Android market but when you're talking over100,000 apps in each store it can start to become meaningless because odds arexyou can ring whatever you are looking for.
Im sure there are other questions to ask but thesexare a few off the top of my head. I have a Droid X that I think is awesome and consequently not much interest in the iphone. But your needs may differ. Definitly go to the store and play with the phones to see what you are comfortable with. Maybe head over to Androidcentral's sister site TiPb: The #1 iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch blog and see what they have to say. Good luck and let us know what you choose.

If you like to fiddle and customize things, and are willing to work a bit to get that control, Android is better than Apple. If you just want something that almost always works, and are willing to live with custom cables, iTunes, and Less actual control, iPhone is for you (and that's okay, really!).

I have an EVO phone and an iPad plus an iPod Nano, so I have a foot in both camps myself. But for my phone I am constantly using it and want it just right for me, thus I am an Android guy.

Well, I went this last Friday and must of spent atleast 3 hours checking out the phones and bsing with the sales reps. I knew I didn't want a physical keyboard so it came down to the X or the Incredible. In the long run, I decided not to wait for the new gen phones simply because I couldn't stand my blackberry any much longer. I picked the Droid X. I am loving the phone and do not regret my choice at all. Best thing hands down is the navigation. Any specific apps I should download? Currently I have the following:

-Advanced Task Killer(I've heard split views on this.. some say it just wastes memory and others say its good).. Opinions?
-AIM, Facebook, Twitter, Angry Birds, Battery Widget(thinking about deleting this because Simiclock has a battery icon), Adobe Flash Player 10.1, Blink, Fxcamera, Simiclock(LOVE IT), Launcher Pro, Maps, Simple Sound Widget(great sound profile app), Sirius XM, TiKL(Touch to Talk) and thats basically it for now.

A few questions:
1) How do I take screenshots of my homescreen and other screens?

2) When I lock my phone, I have to swipe my screen to get to my homescreen. I don't want this.. I would rather have to swipe in a pattern but when I turn on the pattern lock.. I have to swipe left to right then enter the pattern.. Any way to turn off the left to right swipe?

THAAAANKS

Good choice with the X. You'll love the phone. I'm normally the type of person to get a new phone every 4-5 months, but Ive kept the X since it was launched on July 15th. In terms of apps, it all depends on what you want to do with it. I here Launcher Pro is good, I personally use ADW Launcher EX and love it. If you are into tech news, check out Pulse. It feeds news updates from all kinds of sites (tech, sports, news). I also use Springpad for note taking, best I've used so far. Angry Birds is a must, lol, but if your into games, check out Kongregate. It's a collection of 300+ flash games, and they are adding new games all the time. I also use Sportstap, audiogalaxy (for music), and Beautiful Widgets.

Unlock:

Unfortunately there is no way to get around the unlock screen. Even if you set up a PIN or Pattern Lock, it will still require you to swipe left to right. Check out this:

I would suggest handcent SMS. Its a SMS replacement app that has a great notification setup. Dropbox is a must have app that allows you to store files, pictures etc. to the cloud and retrieve them from anywhere . Lastly checkout evernote which allows you have notes organized.

How come I receive notifications 50% of the time with G-Mail and Facebook? I need to be notified as they come in.. Anyway to fix this?

just curious, but does ShootMe not work with the droid x?

Not tried No Lock but it MAY work if you still want a password...

Phone needs to be "rooted" for Shoot Me to work.

so your only receiving facebook notifications through gmail 50% of the time? I know a couple of my friends were having issues with google sync yesterday. Their gmail and calendar weren't syncing, and it wasn't related to one carrier. One of them had Sprint, 2 had Verizon, and 1 is on AT&T. I personally didn't have any issues at all, but that's not saying you don't. Go into settings ---> go to accounts ----> and choose your gmail account. It will tell you there if gmail is not syncing. It should have Contacts, Gmail, Calendar and Google Reader if you have it installed.

same I get all of my Gtalks, Gmails, Fbooks etc etc doesn't miss a single one.

As far as apps:

-I would try out Gvoice and get rid of your texting plan. I dont MMS much....if I really need to I can just pay the .25 or just use email.

-If you use twitter, use Tweetdeck

-Beautiful Widget

-Angry Birds

-Astro - File manager

-ti-83...best calculator and brings me back to my old days

-Chrome to Phone

-DropBox

-Gmote

-IMDB

-Mini Info

-iSyncr and iSyncr Wifi to sync up your music with your iTunes

-PowerAMP - better music player imo

-psx4Droid SNOID etc if you want to play emulators

-Ringdroid

probably a lot more but that is all I can think of off the top of my head. Hope it helps.

Nexus S Tmobile no contract $55 per month FTW!

Thanks for the help with the apps. I picked up iSyncr, Mini Info, Astro and Beautiful Widget. Love em all. Is there an app that lets me play videos or allows me to stream videos?

Glad you picked up the X as its a great device and android is quite a powerful OS. I would however have advised you to wait a couple of weeks. The new devices (including the IPhone) all bring something new to the table.

Now that you are experiencing android why give up features that are only going to come with 4g devices? I would advise that you return the X and when the thunderbolt launches you take a look at that. You will be paying the same data costs, can use the same apps you have purchased and will be getting a phone that has a superior feature set. you say you want to watch video and such and with the Kickstand and better speakers on the bolt it is a much better media device.
