Howdy, another newb question. Is there any true desktop management software, a-la Blackberry Desktop, with which to manage contacts and files/folders and such?

Depends which route you want to take. Google takes care of your contacts for your. As far as files/folders goes theres bluetooth or Wifi apps in the market.

Google Supplied...No, unfortunately. Though without the software everything can be taken care of through the USB cable and just some click and drags. Calenders can be synced with Google from outlook with Gsync, contacts can be uploaded to google and then wirelessly sent to the phone with the google calenders you synced up through Gsync, Files and music, plug in the device, mount it, and move your files to where you need them on the SD card. Without rooting, that is the only file level access you get on the Droid, is you want to be able to access the phones file system....Root... But as @lolfests said, sure to be some software out there that can do this for you...but doubtful it will be free.

It looks like there is some free software that may come pretty close to BB Desktop Manager. I found MyPhoneExplorer and have been using it on my home and work computers for a couple of days to sync my contacts and appointments with Outlook. At work I'm on Outlook 2003 and at home its 2010. It seems to work fine with both.

It was a three part install to get it up and running. First I downloaded version 1.8 of MyPhoneExplorer from FJ Software Development. It wouldn't detect my phone but I found an update that solved that issue. The link to it is in their Forum in the English section. The topic to look for is "Usable on Samsung Fascinate?" There is a link posted to an update and it allows MyPhoneExplorer to detect my Fascinate. The third step is to locate the MyPhoneExplorer app in the marketplace and put that on your device. I connect via USB and it works well. There is an option in the software for a WiFi connection - I haven't tried that out so I can't comment on it.

It doesn't seem to be quite as user friendly as Desktop Manager 5.0 was, but it's getting the job done. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure Desktop Manager was user friendly, I think I was just used to it!

I've never done this before so it's probably the wrong place. Sorry. I used to have a blackberry and could just move music or pictures from my laptop to my blackberry via the USB cord supplied. There was also some desktop manager software for the blackberry.

Now I have a Samsung Fascinate now but can't figure out how to get my music transferred. The USB cord is hooked up but there doesn't seem to be any communication between the two. And there's no desktop manager software for the droid. I copied my laptop's music to dropbox so I can retrieve it that way on the droid, but one song at a time is so tedious.

suzigeer,

Of coarse there's a way to transfer files via USB cord without any additional software. Go to Settings: USB Settings and select either 'Mass storage' or 'Ask on connection'. Then connect your usb cable and follow the prompts to complete the connection. Your computer should see your phone like any other USB thub drive. At this point, just navigate through your phone's files and folders using windows explorer and complete your file tasks (i.e. cut/paste etc.) as you would normally.
