Duo & Google Assistant

Just recently switched from an iPhone after 10 years to a google pixel 2 and have some questions as i'm going along.

specifically, i installed Duo so i can replace my FaceTime with it but i notice that google assistant won't make Duo calls for me and internet search doesn't help.

Google responds back "i can't make Duo video calls" when i say "make a video duo call to *name*".

I seem to have set all permissions for Duo but still nothing. I tried associating duo as a video app in the assistant (by talking to it too and she accepted) but still nothing.

is there any advise on how i can make a duo call essentially hands free? Siri used to do "FaceTime *name*" with no issues.

Does the person you are calling have Duo? I think that you need Duo on both sides.

I don't think GA has that programming at this time. May want to try contacting Tech Support for more insight, though.

That's what I suspected from the message that it was telling me but I was really surprised that a flagship phone does not integrate with Google's own app::-(

And yes the other person has Duo installed so that's not an issue.

That's wild. Why would they do that? Hangouts works and they are talking about moving it out of the consumer space. Duo is supposed to be the replacement there.

If anyone does ever hear from google about this, I'd love to hear what they say.

Well, Try Just saying "Make Video Call with (person)" They recently made some changes to the dialer and made the video calling native and that has worked for me.

You would think that GA would work with any Google App in any way, but maybe when they made the change to the dialer the intent was tp make it easier ...

Just had a chat with google support and did screen share only in the end to be told that this feature does not exist.

Saying "make a video call" tells me I have no video app installed. I can voice command to open duo but you can't voice commend for it to actually make a video call.

I have to say it's really disappointing, I'll write to google directly for what it's worth. I would expect this not to work with other apps (on iPhone I couldn't make a video call though Skype though Siri) but this is equivalent of Siri not being able to make a FaceTime call which is ridiculous.

The other person has to have Duo, yes. For whatever reason, if the command is to use Duo to make the call, GA says it can't make Duo video calls. If you don't specify the app, it does.

It's crazy that it works for you but not me, I keep getting an errors saying that I have no video app installed if simply say that

So I just tried this again and video called my brother to wish him a Happy New Year. GA did the video call, but executed through Hangouts and not Duo. It seems that's how it's been working on my phone. My brother must have hangouts on his phone.

Actually, the comparison isn't 100% correct, technically. Hangouts comes pre-installed on a lot of phones that Assistant works with (just like how FaceTime comes pre-installed on iPhones), and "make a video call" command works with Hangouts with no issues. But yes I get your pain, Duo shouldn't be left out from that magic.

I think it is a fair comparison, isn't Hangouts going away as a consumer product and duo was introduced as its replacement?

Otherwise what's the point of duo/alo/Hangouts being 3 separate apps?

That's really the frustration, I think. I mean GA will open the app, but can't do what the app it for. Why have it work with Hangouts, but not with Duo?

Google needs to do a better job at integration. Apple does this better than anyone else. Google as duo, allo, messenger, hangouts. Way too much going on. Duo needs to be baked into the OS, and again, now in 2018, android still does not have an imessage combatant.
