DX Issues after Root & GB Rom

This is the first time I'm posting so please go easy on me.

So, I've never rooted before and I'm a complete novice when it comes to this - watched all the androidcentral youtube links for z4root, bootstrap recovery, etc.

I downloaded and installed the following;

z4root
titanium backup
bootstrap recovery
clockwork rom manager (pro)

I rooted my DX w/ z4root, then backed up my data w/ titanium backup. I then used bootstrap to boot into Clockwork Recovery and installed the TBH Gingerbread rom w/ Clockwork Rom Manager.

It all worked perfectly fine for a few days and then I decided that I wanted to flash a different rom (and I know this is where I messed something up). I went into titanium backup and restored my phone to the backup I created w/ titanium the first time. After this I noticed that the theme, app icons, etc. went back to how I had them before I rooted the phone, but the notification bar and setting screen all still looked like they did when I had the phone rooted and GB flashed. So I unrooted the phone, which I'm guessing was a bad idea.

Now I can't re-root the phone to flash a new rom. Every time I try to do so with z4root it gets to 'Acquiring Root Shell' and then just goes to the home screen. I can't reboot in recovery via bootstrap because it's telling me that phone doesn't have superuser permissions and manually booting in recovery (holding down power button and home, etc.) does nothing. It just sits in that exclamation point screen.

So...I don't know what I can do. Should I hit 'restore to factory settings'???

I'd greatly appreciate any and all suggestions. Thanks

I have read that if you want to go back to your non-gingerbread rom you need to SBF.

Well I have rooted and loaded the same apps as you have. I flashed to the latest Apex ROM and would love to try Gingerbread but I am deathly afraid of screwing something up!

I have read alot of info regarding SBFing and seem to be confused more often than not. If I could have a step by step of exactly what I should do going from APEX to gingerbread and then step by step going from Gingerbread back to Apex I would feel more comfortable.

I am guessing you are in the same boat.

There is a ton of great info on this site and sometimes I just get frustrated with searching it out and assuring I have the right steps for my situation.

Good luck!

I had posted this before, but p3Droid of Team Black Hat on MyDroidWorld (who leaked the Gingerbread for DX in the first place) said that if you're on a ROM you can skip the SBF. By this he means that if you're on the 2.3.340 firmware, you don't have to SBF back to 2.3.340 firmware. If that makes sense. If you are on on this firmware, you can put the GB Root file on the root of your SD card, boot into Clockwork Recovery (Bootstrapper) wipe data/factory reset, and install this zip.

If you are NOT on 2.3.340 firmware (as in, you installed Gingerbread non-root before they released the rooted version) you WILL have to SBF back. It is also possible to not be on 2.3.340 if you're on the earlier version and never updated from however long ago. It's been awhile though, so most likely you are on 2.3.340. For example: I was on the 2.3.340 firmware running Rubix Focused 2.0.1. I put the GB Rooted file on the root of my SD card. Booted into Bootstrapper, wipe data/factory reset, installed that zip, and voila, rooted Gingerbread.

I don't want my instructions to completely screw you up so I hope this makes sense to you :) Like 4 weeks ago I didn't understand a damn thing about any of this. Most of the ROMs will let you check which firmware you're on in the Settings-->About Phone section, but I haven't tried every single one so I'm not positive.

To the OP: I'm a little confused. Right now there aren't any ROMs available for Gingerbread, just themes for deodexed Gingerbread since it just came out. Which ROM were you trying to flash?

I'm constantly checking my DX (prior to rooting it on Tuesday) for system updates, so I know for certain that when I rooted/installed the leaked GB firmware I was using 2.3.340(I misspoke before when I said GB rom, I should've said firmware I think).

I know that I can throw the leaked GB on my SD, boot into bootstrapper, wipe and install the leaked GB - then flash ontop of it the just released TBH Full GB and it'll work fine.

The problem is that I definitely screwed something up by going into Titanium Backup - restoring to the backup I made prior to rooting, then going into z4root and 'Unrooting' my phone.

Now every time I try to Permanent Root my DX w/ z4root it always force closes during the 'Acquiring Root Shell' process and never gets to a point where my phone becomes rooted. If my phone isn't rooted I can't boot into bootstrapper or even access clockworkmod rom manager because they don't work unless your DX has superuser (root) permissions.

So, now I'm stuck with a theme that's some weird combination of the leaked GB firmware (the notification bar, the animation between screens, etc.) and the GO Launcher EX theme I had installed on the phone prior to my root (the app icons, etc.).

Not sure where to go from here.

I think - but someone correct me if I am wrong - that whatever you did with z4 root might not matter to begin with. z4 root won't work with Gingerbread anyway. Can you check and see if you have superuser permissions? Maybe by going into Bootstrapper and hitting the Bootstrap Recovery button? If you do not, and you have indeed lost root, it is possible in order to get back to rooted Gingerbread you will have to SBF back to 2.3.340, root, and then reinstall Gingerbread. I had to do this so it's not quite as awful as it sounds, but it intimidated me quite a bit at first.

In the meantime, like I said, I know z4root won't work with Gingerbread anyway, so it's entirely possible that you running it did nothing and you are still rooted. If you could check and see if you have superuser permissions that would be good :)

Z4root can also used for the rootable GB leak. There may be other ways to root it though. With z4root it was a bit flakier than it was on froyo but it worked for me after a few tries.

The rootable GB leak? It comes rooted. There is no known way to root it other than downloading the rooted gingerbread.zip and installing on a rooted .340 device through CWM. Using z4root on the rooted leak is... craziness imo. Its a double root! Please direct me to otherwise.

There are many people with problems and part of their scenario always involves Titanium Backup.

**Resolved** DX stuck after SBF back to 2.3.34

Hey everybody,
I'm a regular poster and helper over at the Fascinate forums. I rooted my friends DX with (last letter of the alphabet)4 root. Sorry I'm on his laptop and that key doesn't work on his laptop. I then used the D2 bootstrap to flash the pre-rooted Gingerbread. His battery wouldn't hold a charge after that. Also, the sync icon like his facebook was constanlty syncing was in his notification bar non stop. He wanted to take his phone back to the store to see if he could get a new battery. I used SBF to get him back to 2.3.34 but his phone was completly locked up after reboot when the SBF was done installing. I've managed so far to use *228 option 1 to get him that far, but none of his buttons at the bottom of the phone work - menu, home, back, search. Anybody hear about anything like this? I'm still working away and making small progress. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ETA - Well I got my friend back to stock Froyo 2.3.34. From everything I could figure out, he has some kind of short in his USB connection which is causing his phone not to charge properly, more like a fractional trickle charge. It seemed to also affect everything I was trying to do while either the standard charger or usb cable to laptop were connected to phone. I let the phone sit on a charger for a little while, and when I rebooted after unplugging the charger, he was back to out of the store Froyo with his wallpaper and apps in place. Except the battery was draining so fast, I didn't have enough battery to restore his contacts yet. I plugged back into charger and wallpaper disappeared and phone froze up. Menu, home, back, and search buttons didn't work, couldn't scroll between home screens, all the previous problems came back any time anything was plugged into the usb port. Just wanted to let everyone know the problem has basically been resolved. He is taking his phone to a vzw store tomorrow.

SBF Recovery

The following link contains instructions for performing an SBF recovery
Motorola Droid X SBF is Available! Restore a Bricked Droid X! - PPCGeeks

In the event of bootloop or other problems:
"what you need to do is a battery pull, then while putting the battery back in the phone, hold the power button and home button on the phone at the same time you put the battery back in, it will put you into recovery mode, and more then likely you will have a droid icon with a pyramid that has a exclamation point in it. You then want to press the search button and it will bring up options for you to reboot phone, use the volume rocker keys to go down to factory reset and select it with the camera button. let it run thru it's process and then go up to reboot phone. this should fix your issues. good luck and let us know what happens." jonagner,

You do understand that the "titanium backup" you made just backs up applications and the associated data. A nandroid backup let's you go back to a previously loaded ROM. Since you are on the Gingerbread leak, you would have to SBF to get back to a Froyo ROM.

You will need to check around about re-rooting your phone. When the rootable version of Gingerbread came out, those that had tried the leaked non-rooted version had to SBF back to froyo, re-root, install bootstrap and then re-flash the rooted leak.

Unless Z4 really works for Gingerbread, I haven't heard this confirmed, then your best bet will be to download RSDlite and the full SBF file and make your way back to Froyo.

Installing leaks that jump you from one version of Android to the next is a little bit more in-depth than flashing between ROMs on the same Android version. I did my homework and have some experience doing this stuff and I still ran into problems with loading a patch on top of the leak that many have used without issue. I had a bootlooping brick for a couple of days until I was finally able to get the SBF to take.

Ok I was wondering if this would be pointed out. The only solution is to SBF back to Froyo..

SBF usually hung at 100% of install but when RSD Lite reported Manual Restart Device just pull battery and reboot back into bootloader and installation will report completed successful and all was good.

That's exactly what happened to me, however, my first boot was yet again bootloops. I rebooted into OE recovery, factory reset, reboot and finally I got my DX back and functioning.

After SBF I have always did a stock reset to avoid bootloop after SBF
