In what situations would HDR be a drawback? It is often easier and more practical to leave it on, however HDR is not always necessary and has some drawbacks.

I've been using manual mode more. Auto mode seems to crank up the ISO(and noise)
Quickly switch into manual and do the mannequin challenge to hild the phone steady.lolI dislike night pics in auto.. Super noisy but hey.. What do you do when you need a quicky?

If possible, in those situations where you use a longer shutter speed, use something to help stabilize your hand or hands: table, chair or even set your arm against a wall or corner of a wall.Bingo. In low light, it loves to shoot at ISO 3200, which will be grainy as all get out. Sometimes you don't have much choice, but you'll get much better results switching to manual and using a longer shutter speed and lower ISO. The obvious downside here is greater potential for motion blur.
True, but it's not only that. If anything in the frame moves, it'll be a blur too. Depending on what you're going for, that can be a good thing too.If possible, in those situations where you use a longer shutter speed, use something to help stabilize your hand or hands: table, chair or even set your arm against a wall or corner of a wall.
I have to say that they are on point with the rating system. I feel like overall the S7 has a more well rounded camera and a very good auto mode + faster focusing. Still the V20 takes very good photos with better detail, however the colors aren't as bright/vibrant when using auto mode.
Bright and vibrant isn't necessarily good.. You don't want unrealistically bright shots all the time.I have to say that they are on point with the rating system. Bright popping colors have nothing to so with the actual camera lens, but the software settings it uses after the photo is taken. You can setup the V20 in the same fashion if you choose. Your best bet is to find the camera that takes the most sharpest, steady photos, for your situations.
Is this based on tap and shoot like other phones, or did the article writer tweak each pic manually? The point about the V20 is not manual pics, but the lack of optimization of top and shoot mode. Especially in low light.
I think I remember them saying in the comments of the G4 review that their tests are done in auto mode (people got on to them for not counting the RAW capabilities), so I'd expect the same on any phone they test.I don't think it was in manual... At least not in all cases but from the way it's written its not always readily apparent.
