Earphones controls no longer working

I have a pair of iHome metal earbuds with mic and controls. I used to be able to use the controls although sometimes it had a habit of not working. Now I can't use the controls at all. I can still hear fine out of them but the controls don't do anything. Any suggestions as to what I can do?

You're still using them on the same phone? iHome stuff tends to be "Made for iPhone," so sometimes that causes compatibility issues with non-iOS devices.

Make sure there isn't any debris in the headphone jack--use a can of compressed air to blow it out.

Might be the cables inside the headset. My Samsung ones did the same thing and it was a loose ground wire. Re-soldered that and problem solved.

Also, if you're using Play Music as your player of choice, it has the habit of sometimes going rogue and screwing up headset control response. A simple reboot should fix it if it's that, though.

Yeah I'm still using the iHome headsets with my G3. But I got a new one as a warranty replacement because the previous one stop receiving signal. But I'm using the sets with Google Play Music. I tried it with the stock music player and still didn't work.

And I don't think there's anything in the jack connection as it still plays out of both earphones.

If Play Music is 'the culprit', the headset won't work with ANY other players. But like I said, if it is the case, rebooting the phone should clear the issue. Sounds to me like this isn't your particular case.

As for the audio coming out of the earphones, that doesn't mean that there's not something wrong with either the headset or the jack itself. Thanks to all these controls you can have through your headphone jack (some accessories let you control camera shutter, notifications, etc.), the audio cables are no longer the only thing that run through your phone/headset. You can still have the audio signals properly wired and playing, but the control signals all jacked up, or viceversa. You can even try non-compatible headsets and you'll see what I mean (try a Nokia one into a Samsung... pressing the control button on the headset makes your audio go monoaural until released).
