OK, haven't found a good answer after searching for this, but I imagine this would be useful for many folks who flash ROMs frequently....

The biggest pain in the butt-hole when upgrading to a new ROM version (NOTE: I'm not referring to switching ROMs here - simply going up to the next version of the same ROM) is having to wipe, reinstall your apps and setting up your phone just the way you like it.

I've heard that Titanium Backup is the best utility to back up your apps, but it doesn't handle your personal preferences (e.g. phone ringer, wallpaper, email notification, screen layout, etc.)

Is there anything available that would back up these preferences and restore them easily??

For myself, I use Locale for my settings anyways. There is a backup plugin for Locale that saves the settings on your sd card.

Titanium Backup is great for apps and the data associated with them.

LauncherPro can backup its settings. All you have to add are the widgets.

I am new to android and looking to root, however, I'm concerned about backing up my phone numbers, do they get sync'ed as soon as I sign into my Google Account on the phone? I've read the Rooting FAQ but so far I had not been able to find the answer to this question.

(I was going to make a new thread but this is kind of similarly spirited post so I decided to add to this one.)

I use EVO btw. Tnx

your contacts & all other data (calendar, stocks, news, weather, etc) in your gmail account can be manually sync'ed (menu>accounts & sync> sync all). they don't necessarily sync when you turn on the phone--it's safest to perform this manual Sync BEFORE you root your phone to ensure all of your contact info & calendars are updated onto google server so that when you load them again AFTER root, they're just the way you were accustomed to.

if you're concerned about syncing them AFTER you have rooted--it shouldn't be a problem. if you don't see them appear immediately, simply perform the manual-sync steps above and give it a few minutes (as over 300 contacts can take several minutes to sync).

did this answer your question--or have i overlooked something?

s a side question, is there a place one can go online and edit all that info stored on phone?

How about call logs and text messages? Those aren't synced with google AFAIK.

And if I use Titanium Backup to back up app data, can it be restored on a new rom?

For example, if I don't want to lose my place in Angry Birds after flashing a new rom, can I just install Angry Birds from the market, and use Titanium Backup to restore the app data (which contains which level I'm on)?

There is a free app called SMS backup that will back up your messaging to a folder in your Gmail account. It can then be restored. It has a setting for continuous backup as well.

There is also an app called CallLog backup that should help as well. I ahven't used it myself before, but it is well rated. It is a $0.99 app.

Titanium Backup can backup and restore apps AND data. This will for instance restore your progress in Angry Birds.

I use "reware's 'My Backup Pro' " $1.99, It backs up sms, call log, app data, everything to your sd card or online it works great !

Everyone usually uses Titanium Back Up

App Brain is a kool little option too but no settings are saved

Personally I dont run enough Apps to need an app back up

I just remember where everything needs to go and what I use...

Right now, I'm on a RC1. I would like to flash the 6.1 stable version but I would like the SMS messages to be there when I restore back. I used titanium to back up the entire phone I believe. Basically I would like to update without change besides the firmware of the phone. Mostly likely no way to do that...

I went from RC3 to 6.1 Stable without a wipe and have had no problems. I suggest you do a Nandroid backup first, but it kept everything as is. Otherwise backup apps and settings with TI and use SMS Backup or similar top back up your SMS to Gmail.

Thank you for that. I'm gonna to flash the 6.1 stable without wiping of course with a nandroid backup.
