so basically i'm the "tech" guy when it comes to my group of friends and i'm the one that has to learn everything for everyone to do lol.

I have a friend he decided he wants to overclock his evo, and he's been bugging me about it for the past month.

whats the easiest, fastest, best way to root then add a custom kernal to overclock?

any suggestions on kernals?

I think you're going too fast...

Once rooted, you want to be confident on the following:
Using your custom recovery for the following functions--
-nandroid back and restore
-significance of wiping; data, cache, sd-ext, dalvik
-flashing ROMs and mods
-Backing up your 4G/WiMax RSA keys
-flashing Radios!!! this is a big one.
---Certain radios versions only work with a Sprint/HTC code base. For example, any rom based off of 3.70 requires the latest radio.
---You can flash Radio/PRI/NV combo, or individually

you'll also need to know how to backup/restore--
-using a service such as AppBrain which will keep a record of all apps used, and can also be used to push apps to the phone. No data is retained with this method.
-Backing up all apps to the SD card using Astro or Estrongs, just apks are backed up.
-using Titanium Backup to backup/restore data

You'll want to know all this as the "tech guy" for your group because... when something goes wrong, you'll have to diagnose and fix it. Also, confidence and knowledge in all these areas will mitigate loss of data or accidental bricking. I would first try out different ROMs, make sure things are stable... The phone will likely be faster than stock ANYWAY. A customer kernel for OC'ing may not even be desirable or needed at this point. After things are stable and all apps and data are migrated, I would suggest at that point proceeding with playing around with different kernels.
