The prices people are asking for late model phones is way out of line. I guess they are trying to cash in before a slew of new phones come in this summer and fall. They'll be eating them if they don't reduce prices dramatically.
 
If you go on local websites e.g Gumtree were people sell near your house and you have to collect they tend to be cheaper.
 
Like which phones? I was browsing a few different models and they seemed reasonable for what they were. Off contract phones are expensive.
 
Swappa is a good place to look. Plus you can check IMEI numbers right there, to verify the phone isn't blacklisted.

You would be surprised at the value older phones still hold. Even broken they are worth reasonable money for parts.

My son just sold his Galaxy Nexus with a cracked screen on craigslist for $100 no problem
