Editting word on Gboard

So I'm trying out Gboard. So far so good, except when I accidentally use the wrong word, and just want to delete the last letter.

When I press backspace, the whole word disappears, but I only want to delete one letter (see attached pic for example). Is this a setting somewhere or am I just stupid?

Thanks

This happens to me on Swype, and it doesn't have a setting for this either. If it did, I'm not sure I'd change it because I more often want to delete the word.

I guess hitting space-bar then back space twice is the way to do it? Maybe I'm just nostalgic about my old phone (Sony z5c) and haven't yet fully excepted I've now got a Samsung, but that Xperia keyboard was brilliant, so I'm looking for another that does everything the same. 😁

Yip, that's what I do, unless the word I want ("help" in your example) is in the word suggestion list. Then I'll just select it instead.

This is what I do as well. Not sure there's any setting otherwise to change this behavior.
