Effect on S-Pen functionality of Rooting/Flashing the Note 2

I'm considering getting a Note 2 because I love the size and the S-Pen functionality (hovering cursor, S-Memo, etc), but I don't really like TouchWiz. My current phone is a Galaxy Nexus, and I love stock Android. I'm curious about rooting the Note 2 and flashing a ROM that isn't TouchWiz-based. Is it possible for developers to build a non-TouchWiz ROM that maintains the S-Pen functionality? Or are the S-Pen features built into TouchWiz such that I can't have one without the other? Would I essentially be left with a big Galaxy Nexus with a standard capacitive stylus?
