Email Icon Showing Emails Not There

My office email (pop 3) icon shows that there are 4 emails but there are none. It's been doing this for about a week now. If I get 4 real emails, it then shows 8 emails. I'll then delete the real 4 and it still shows 4 emails.

Anybody have this problem and / or know the solution to fix it, other then to delete and re-enter the email account?

Welcome to Android Central! Have you tried going to Settings>Apps>All, selecting Email, and Clearing Cache? If that doesn't work, you could also try Clear Data--but I'm not sure if you'd have to add the email account back after you do this.

You also might want to look through your old messages and see if any were marked unread and are now appearing as new

Was there a for sure verified solution to this? My stock email icon has been doing this for awhile as well? Must have happened after some update?
Mine started with just showing 1 unread email message, but now shows 18 unread email messages. I am sure I have none unread messages. I have even selected all my messages and marked them as read, the email icon still shows I have 18 unread messages. I have been trying all suggested methods to correct this and none seems to work for me. Thanks in advanced for any help. - J__D
