Email not being checked automatically?

Hey folks, just wondering if anyone else is having the same issue with email as I am. I'm still an Android n00b, so bear with me. :P

I've got my Gmail and another POP3-based email account set up on my A500. If I open either mail client manually, they will poll and download email; but the tablet is not polling for email automatically otherwise. I've had emails not show up for literally days, until I open the mail app myself.

I'm half-way thinking that maybe this only actually works on 3G-enabled devices, but that would be a pretty silly limitation for WiFi-only tablets if so. I've tried turning automatic polling on and off, or changing the intervals, but this doesn't seem to make a difference. Is there another setting somewhere that I need to change?

I could try having the device constantly leave WiFi on, (it turns off whenever I lock the screen, but I'd assume email-polling would temporarily turn it on?) but I imagine that would be a massive drain on the battery.

Is your sync on? Is there a sync in settings?

Umm... I just turmed Sync on for that email account in the main Settings app. That said, I have no idea what that actually does. Lol. Again, forgive the n00bness Does this wind up synching my other email account with Gmail? Or is the Android sync something entirely different?

Auto-Sync and Background Data determine whether your email accts, etc. automatically refresh and check for new data (sounds like that's what you want) or whether it only happens when you open/update manually. Sounds like you've found the right setting. Note, though, that this will drain your battery much quicker vs you manually pulling...

Ahhh, makes perfect sense -- and indeed, turning Sync on did fix the problem. I'll have to monitor battery life, I dropped it back down to hourly rather than every 30 mins, as I did find my battery life dropped a bit quicker last night. Though, I was using the tablet a lot...

You may also want to check your wifi setting. When the tablet goes to sleep wifi will turn off to save on battery life. I think if you need the email to sync when the tablet is a sleep you will need to adjust the setting to keep the wifi connection when the tablet sleeps. I had this one for a week and it killed the battery really fast, I ended up changing it back to disconnect wifi when the tablet was a sleep.

Doesn't appear to be necessary when the Sync setting is on. I'm assuming that setting causes the tablet to temporarily turn on WiFi, do its work, and then shut it back off. Thing before was, even when my WiFi was on all the time (I tried that), it still didn't grab my email -- the Sync setting definitely appears to be what was needed.

Cool glad its working for you. I may need to recheck my settings when I home from work :)
