Email Problem - Configuration/Data Gone!

I've had my Captivate for a couple weeks and twice now I've had a problem with the native email application. Yesterday, I opened the email app and it gave me the new account screen - none of the three accounts I had set up (one POP3 and two exchange) exist anymore. It's as if the data file has been corrupted or deleted. Nothing at all - just prompts me to set up an email account.

Has anyone else had this happen? This is the second time it happened - I've tried turning the phone on/off and there wasn't anything unusual in any other app. No crash, etc. I just opened the email app.

Do either of your Exchange accounts require (enforce) a PIN? If that's required by the security policies, entering the wrong PIN 3 times will erase the exchange data on the phone. As the native email client would have access to the data for all three accounts, it may erase all three accounts at once.

Bit of a long shot, but it's the only thing I can think of. I haven't seen any similar posts, so there's probably something particular about the way your unit is set up and is being used.

Hope this helps,

AoN

Hah - just saw dgaddes post below :) AoN

Yes, this has happened to me also, for no apparent reason. In general, I find the email on the Captivate to be horrible - both pop3 and exchange. It is really slow to do anything. Deleting emails is almost a joke it is so slow.

The standard email client is really bad and notoriously for crashing! I switched over to maildroid and it seem to run a lot better!

Cheers,
Charlie

No PIN enforcement. So, not that.

dgaddes - yes, super slow to delete. I'm using Touchdown now. I wonder if there is any conflict across email apps. I'm using Touchdown, K-9, and RoadSync - all in an effort to decide which one will be my primary app since the native app sucks so bad. So, maybe something like a conflict?

I'll probably just use K-9 for my POP3 and Touchdown for the two Exchange accounts.

I also experienced garbled emails - emails I sent to someone from my Exchange account (using the native app) were gibberish - see sample:

I've also had this happen a couple times. I use both Exchange and pop accounts. I haven't tried any 3rd party mail apps yet, so I don't think it's that. I guess I could just try using a mail app.

Well there goes my Exchange account. Nothing in the inbox....and the settings were wiped. WTF!

My IT guy said that he set up a Droid for another user and warned me that sometimes it may just wipe out and I may have to redo everything. WTF x2!

Try K-9 Mail, it's based on the native email client, but is MUCH MUCH better, and a lot more sane functionality and features.

The native email client was near unusable for me because of IMAP folder nesting.

This happened to me the first week I had the phone. I just put the settings back in and it's been fine since. If it does it again I might look into getting a mail app.

I had the email account dissapear (Exchange) last week. Contacts and calendar were still present. NO PIN enforcement. Very bizarre.
