Email question

Having both the gmail app and the standard email app, and how do you use the regular email app using you gmail account without getting notifications from both? Dumb question I know.

gmail>menu>account settings>uncheck notifications. I thought if I did that, being google, it would shut them off for that email address, but it was only for the gmail app.
