noob here..
i am using the standard email app that came with the captivate. i wans to be able to select all new email messages and change them all to "read". i cant figure out how to do this. also, i'd like to be able to select several email message at one time to delete or move to a folder. can I do this with the default app, or do i need to get another email app??
thanks!

i'm not real sure on how to select multiple messages, but from what i've read here and on other forums, there isnt an option on the default mail client to move messages to specific folders. i dont get it as its one of the most basic things to do. i've been just using the stock gmail app and it works great. the yahoo mail app also works really well and both of these apps offer the functions you are looking for very easily.

You can go to menu>accounts in the email app, then select the "Combined Inbox". There all emails will be listed, regardless of account. Use the checkmark on the left of each email to select them all, then you can "Mark as Read" .

As for moving to another folder, this functionality is missing with the standard email app. :(

Google's GMAIL app for Blackberry is SOOO much better than the one for Android... go figure?!?!

Look into the K-9 Mail app. I've moved from the default mail app to K-9 Mail and found it so much more powerful. It's built on the default mail app code, but includes a lot more functionality like move, better imap folder support, PGP/GPG encryption (if you sideload the 2910+ versions).

ok.. i didn't see the check marks. that works pretty good for marking read/unresd and deleting... i'll have to start looking at some of the other email apps for the other functions. i've been a yahoo mail fan for a long time so i'll look at that as well as the gmail app. thanks for the help!!

+1...

Thank you all for the input. I have loaded K-9 and am giving it a try. So far, so good. I do like tha additional features. One other question... is there a way to remove the stock email app from the home screen and replace it with K-9 or some other email app? Without rooting??

Thanks Again!

You mean from the bottom dock? Yes, go to the full display of apps, hit menu and change "view type" to customizable grid. Then hit menu again and edit....from here you can drag something else into the dock. I'm pretty sure that's how you do it. My memory is kind of fuzzy since I've been on ADW for a while. I'm assuming you're still on touchwiz?

ok.. after a couple of days with k-9, i have mixed feelings. i have 3 email accounts. gmail works fine. yahoo mail wont automatically refresh.. i have to make it check email. my work email (pop) updates fine, but seems to lock up k-9 when deleting or moving emails. i think i'll keep looking for a email app. any other suggestions?? thanks!!!

The review I read here indicates there is only 1.7gb available for app download on the Captivate. Can someone explain why that is the case since there is 16gb of internal memory ? Also how much space is available for music ?

Thanks

Well actually 1.7 GB of space is a lot of space for applications and in this case because the phone is running Eclair *2.1* which does not support running apps off the rest of the storage or even external cards yet, which Froyo *2.2* allows which will mean even more space. I still have 1.59 GB of space with teh following apps installed: Advanced Task Killer Free, Asphalt 5 HD *full*, AT&T myWireless Mobile, DailyHoroscope, Documents To Go, Google Earth, Facebook, Google Voice, gps speedo, maildroid, google maps, mario live wallpaper, marketenabler, Android Market, Myspace, Neocore, Photobucket, ringdroid, root explorer, sms backup, speedtest, tapatalk pro and Titanium Backup.. I have a lot more apps on this phone compared to my old BlackBerry Bold which only had 128 MB ram for os and applications. But I also got rid of all the stock att bloatware apps on the phone and I test out different apps as well.

As for music, you can fill up the 13+ GB of internal storage as well as add a 32 GB card for music, which is what I love about this phone, add a 16 GB card, you get the same amount of space as an iPhone 32 GB phone, but add a 32 GB card and you get 46 GB of useable space.

Sure, I am biased. You can try MailDroid. Search the forums here and read about it.

I've been using Maildroid for a few days now. It does seem to do a better job retreiveing my pop3 email, but it doesn't have the ability to "select all" like K-9 does. Right now I am in a poor reception area where I work so all the email programs I'e tried are slow to retreive emails. That's not going to change any time soon. One thing I have observed is that the stock email program seems to download the emails to the phone then tell you you have a new email. So when I open the email from the stock email app, the email is there. on both K-9 and Maildroid, it seems like the program tells you you have new email, then when you go to view it, you have to wait for it to download. that's really annoying.... any other suggestions??

You might want to check out what the max message size to download is set to in each of the mail apps, to ensure you're making a fair comparison.
