Email without Galaxy Smartphone?

Can I receive email on the Gear S2 without owning a Samsung Galaxy Smartphone?

Right now I'm connected with a Motorola Nexus 6 device but there does not appear to be an email option on the watch or in the gear app.

I use the gmail app on the Nexus 6, btw.
