Email won't sync

I have my email set to check for mail every hour. Well it doesn't unless I go into that account. I have it set to alert me with an icon at the top too. Anyone have this issue? Also my next question. Will normal email (not gmail or exchange) sync if you have the "auto sync" or "background data" UNchecked?? Does that affect email??
