Emails disappearing

I am using the stock email application for my work email which is a simple POP3 account. I have the setting for the email account to receive all emails and to delete from the server when deleted from the inbox. I had several emails in my inbox that I wanted to keep but have disappeared. They don't even show up in the trash. I have not been able to figure out what is happening and am hoping someone here can assist me.
