Emoji boxes disappeared

I just switched to a Samsung galaxy s3 from a bionic. While using the chat app palringo, I could see "boxes" in place of the emoji symbols people would use in a message. The "boxes" do not show up on my Samsung galaxy s3. Where the emoji symbol is it is just a blank space. Any ideas on how I can get the boxes to show back up?

so u want to see a box even though you can't see the emoji anyways?
