Empty icon space in status bar

This just started happening recently. Only getting 3 icons?

Figured it out, it was the Ember coffee mug app. Putting a blank icon up there.

I've seen that kind of behavior from other apps as well. I wish app developers could figure out how to get rid of persistent notification icons if the user doesn't want them, instead of just making them blank (which still takes up space).
