really not trying to beat a dead horse, but there is no way i am ever getting any tech news or recommendations from engadget ever again, thanks to their review of the droid X, which is the last straw for me. their review of the droid x was actually very strong and probably the most favorable review i have ever seen them give an android device...and yet it receives a 7/10. there were really no criticisms leveled at the device except for the fact that it was not shipping android 2.2 (which should only be weighted so much since the device will likely receive the update within 2 months of release; and i doubt they will go back to adjust their review when 2.2 does show up). meanwhile, the iphone 4, which has a LOT a flaws (well-documented at this point), gets a 9/10. in fairness, there were 2 different reviewers for these devices, but in all seriousness, if you are going to be heavily biased as a site towards a particular brand, at least give the illusion of objectivity. i know a review score is only a number, but we also know that there are a ton of people out there looking at that number and nothing else. thank you phil and the gang for actually reviewing a device and not feeling the need to stick an arbitrary number at the end of it. (rant done)

Did you expect anything different?
Phone works great as a phone, marginally well as a camera: 7/10
Phone works ok at best as a camera, and marginally well as a phone: 9/10

Yup, their lackluster review of the Droid X, coupled with the scorecard number, was the last bit of proof I needed to know that Engadget can't be trusted with any kind of reviewing.

They've proven in not-very-subtle-ways how much they love rolling over for Apple, and I loved how they posted those anti-Apple articles for awhile (re: the reception issues) and so many people immediately thought that Engadget was angry with Apple for once, and that it meant that they broke out of their Apple trance.

The Droid X deserves at least a solid 8/10, and if it shipped with Froyo, possibly a 9/10. But Then they realized that the score was too close to their precious iPhone 4, and kicked it down another notch.

Yeah I read it today and thought that it was pretty biased!!! I looked up other phones and was just shocked how the iphone was so much higher when it has a ton of issues!!! Kind of made me sick LOL

I thought it was fine. Try taking off the fanboi glasses.

The iphone does what it does very well. Until android devices start doing the same or better it will be the bar to beat. You know how many people care about .flv support? They'd rather be shooting at 720p at 30 fps.

The droid x comes to the party a little later and doesn't really up anything game wise. So its like the red headed step child. I don't see much developer support either.

Exactly! Simply don't like a publication simply cause it shares a different view than your own??? Geez!

Product Reviews -- Engadget

Read the ENTIRE review and you will see how the score was determined:

"Cast in that light, the Droid X becomes a much less magical phone than the Droid was. It's good, and it's a pretty enjoyable execution of Android 2.1, but it's not a must-have phone -- especially in light of the Droid Incredible and the upcoming Droid 2. From a hardware perspective, this phone is pretty much a bang-on execution of what a high-end mobile powerhouse should be, but Motorola clearly still has work to do in order to play in the same software league as HTC does with Sense."

lol. the mePhone does everything well except for what it should...BEING A PHONE.

Stupid design decision. However a case or skin, something most of us use anyways solves the problem.

I'm anything but an iphone fanboi, I actually despise apple, but I'm still waiting for my os of choice to play catchup in many ways.

exactly. The ipod touch has always been the better unit of the 2. The ipod touch does everything well because it's not a phone.

i see what you are saying, but the parts you highlighted are some of the things i am most upset about. maybe i am more upset with how they are grading their review. i think the phone should be reviewed on its own merits (which, until the wrap-up, it was); not compared against other android phones. this is the equivalent of a video game reviewer giving, say, call of duty modern warfare 2 a lower score than the first because it "wasn't as groundbreaking as the first modern warfare". this is exactly what they did by saying the phone was "not as magical as the droid." if that is how you are going to review a device, of course the iphone will get a better score, as they only have 1 device every year which will naturally be a significant step up over the previous model (well, maybe not in this case...). all i am saying is that the actual review itself doesnt match the score the phone was given. of course i am an android fanboy and that skews my views as well, but hey, you knew this would be an opinionated rant before you even opened the thread ;)

and i dont know why i expected anything less from engadget. just the first time i was frustrated enough to vocalize my frustration.

The both have their idiosyncrasies, but in the past week that I've been testing the iPhone 4, it's baffled me how bad a few of them were on the iPhone. Most people already know this, but every time someone sends you a text message on an iPhone, you are forced to close a popup notification. So annoying! The other thing I was baffled by is not being able to insert an attachment within the standard mail app. I don't know how any business professional could live with that. The phone is beautiful looking, but beyond that I could never use it on a daily basis.

Any way, back to the topic at hand. I'm sure it's extremely difficult for the reviewers to come up with a scientific score that's consistent from review to review. They probably shouldn't even do it, particularly if different people are reviewing the various phones. Opinions are highly subjective and personal. I personally don't think Engadget is in bed with Apple. They actually are the one's that called Apple out on their antenna issues, and continue to do so. Calling them all Apple fanboy's just isn't fair IMHO. I will be the first to admit, that I'm an Android one though :)

Agreed! Read the whole thing, watched the whole video, and then saw the 7/10.

*cough*applefanboys*cough*

The way the guy was waiving his hand to touch the screen was annoying. It was like he was all dopped up and jittery as all hell.

With that said, I have 1 question about the X.

Can it be used outside the US?

Oh and P.S. The iphone vs Evo video the guy made - Whoever you are - your a genius and that is RIGHT on with how ppl are. When someone hears "iphone" they think its a godsend.. and its annoying too.

Here is the thing with that.
Is it smart to put a case on a phone? probably
Would you put a case on it anyway? Maybe
Shout you be force to put a case on the phone for it to work correctly? No way in hell!.

The overall score seems to be inline with the comment of the review:

So, let's just save you a bit of time from the outset: the Droid X is an imposing device, and it's definitely not for the small of hands. Makes no mistake, this is a big phone designed for use by big people. Well, not necessarily "big," but let's just say you're going to have a tough go of it if you're the kind of person that struggles to find a ball at the bowling alley where you can reach all the holes. Software and hardware aside, we'd actually say the size issue is going to be a showstopper for some -- but if you've got smaller hands and you're in the market for a high-end Android device on Verizon, you've still got the 3.7-inch Droid Incredible as a compelling option.

mac is the mavado of cell phones. you pay for the name but you get average tech inside. engadget seems to prefer the iphone over any other device and look at everything else just to find flaws it seems. they should just call it iEngadget.com at this point or MacGadget.com. i am all about freedom of choice and opinion but at the same point im a firm believer of calling a spade a spade. if it has issues then it has issues. if it doesn't then you should not make excuses for issues just so that it seems lower in quality.
