Engadget says EVO a little better than Epic in their Epic Review!

You're right. I'm glad I get all the cool gadgets to check out first hand before making a purchase.

I am more annoyed that they only gave this phone a 8/10. It should have been tied with the Evo. The problem with reviews is that it comes down to the opinion of the person doing the review. Personal Bias can get in the way, as we have seen in the past.

I would also make a point of physically seeing the phone prior to purchasing. Obviously I would narrow it down, by looking at reviews, but also having a healthy dose of skepticism isn't a bad thing either. Either way, the Epic looks like an amazing phone and a nice alternative to the Evo.

Can Touchwiz homescreen by bypassed like Sense can on the EVO, by using LauncherPro or ADW Launcher. If the Epic can sort of shut down Touchwiz, then it could put the EPIC a little above the EVO. The one major flaw in the EPIC is Touchwiz, but shut it down or hide it, might help. I also doesn't have a kickstand, but it is better for games than the EVO. Either way, my wife is getting the Epic 4G in October while I am keeping my EVO, and enjoying every minute I use it. My family will have the best of both worlds. The only problem is now my daughter wants either one, it doesn't matter to her.

My wife has her eye on the Epic as a replacement for her Jurassic LG Rumor. If she gets it I hope I don't wish I'd gotten that instead of the Evo. LOL.

My daughter is getting a new phone very soon. We had thought about the Epic until we found out it is the same physical size (HxW) as the EVO but thicker. It also has a smaller screen and a lesser camera. That turned her off. If it was smaller then she would be interested. But why buy a big form factor with a smaller screen?

One thing is that I have accidentally registered touches on the edges of my EVO's screen when gripping it tightly. The Epic probably won't have that issue with a slightly larger gap around the screen?

Every other review I read thought the opposite. One thing I hated about the Evo was the poor quality of the screen. The colors look washed out, scrolling just isn't smooth and some of the games I tried on it lag. Imo the Epic is just so much better.

Sorry but the GPU and processor speed of the Epic make it a better performing phone. Form factor may shift personal preference but on paper and in real life the Epic is a faster phone by far.

The Epic is a nice phone, but I don't like TouchWiz. It looks like its trying too hard to look like an iPhone -- with a grid of apps. I don't understand why someone who likes Android would want that.

I read a lot of comments like that but no one ever explains what they mean. What is it about this touchwix that people hate so much? Is it the 4 icons on the screen? The grid can be changed to list if you prefer but is that such a deal breaker? Sorry I don't get it.

I've seen the other variants of it and if you think you're really going to get that much faster response with that super bloated version of touchwiz on there.. i've got a bridge in brooklyn to sell you. And to the person that said it should be tied with the evo.. considering its already a known fact that the gps is jacked up on the epic...I think not.

What is bloated about touchwiz and there is no GPS issue. Based on the reviews they said the device ran really smooth and fast. Just another person making up comments with nothing to back it up.

From what I see it has a 1G processor just like the EVO. I guess you are saying theirs is faster. Doesn't sound right to me.

Just because both are 1ghz dont mean anything. ARM based cpu's are confirmed to be faster than qualcomm clock for clock and the hummingbird in the galaxy s cranks up to 4 times the graphics than snapdragon due to its vastly superior gpu (hell it beat the dual core htc glacier and its not even out yet)

But thats for people that like to get into d*ck measuring contests with these things. Snapdragon has proved to be fast enough in day to day basis, uncapped that is... (ex. The Incredible is said to still be faster than the X and D2) but games will suffer

I wish someone could review phones on an individual basis so we can get an accurate expectation of performance.

Saying X phone is faster/smoother than Y phone or slower/choppier than Z phone means absolutely nothing to me as if I do not own the Y or Z phone. Even if I can try said phones in a store it still doesn't give me an accurate representation of how the phone will perform on an everyday basis.

It's like when sites compare how quickly webpages load on two phones. They each take about 15 seconds, but one is about .4 s faster and declared a winner. Really? How is this useful other than internet bragging rights?

Screen comparisons are even more nauseating. We have these SAMOLED screens so now the Evo's screen is being denigrated to seem like it's watch a 1978 Philco tube set vs 2010 Samsung LED TV. Come on, the Evo's screen is gorgeous. Does the Epics screen look better? Yes...when held side by side or because you are told it's supposed to be better. But you'll drive yourself nuts worrying about these kind of things.

I'll end the rant but these types of things are why phones get hyped up so much and fail. They get touted based on features/specs that are in the end minuscule. It would just be nice if someone would use a phone for a week and come back with an honest opinion instead of setting up a bunch of lab tests to determine which is "better."
