EPIC 4G - New to the Forums

I am new to the forums here and just poking around trying to pick up some tips. I have an EPIC 4G - love it and can't wait for the Gingerbread upgrade. I am tempted to try to ROOT the epic and install the Upgrade I downloaded yesterday - but I have heard stories of others really screwing up their phone and I am not the brightest bulb in the room when it comes to this kind of activity - so maybe I will just wait - HOPEFULLY I won't have to wait long. I came close to trying it yesterday but I just don't quite understand the instructions I have copied/downloaded and I am sure I will do something wrong!:-\

Looking forward to learning more - and maybe one day I will be a bit more adventurous and actually will take chance and 'root' it - any suggestions are welcome - any tips are welcome - thanks in advance.

Thanks - let me ask a question - if you were me - never having 'rooted' a phone - would you take a chance to try to root your phone? I have the EPIC 4g and really wolud like to - but I am a little uncertain about how to do it and afraid I will screw it up

your thoughts?
