Hi All,

We are looking at moving to Sprint and decided to jump on the Epic 4G. Now we are finding a lot of places are just plain out of the phones! Even Sprint is out and not sure when it will be back in stock.

Is this due to the popularity of the phone, or is Sprint making some change to the phone?

Thanks!

The phone is almost a year old. I don't think that it is due to the popularity. It may be due to the fact that they may have stopped production on them. The next iteration should be coming about soon.

deff cuz its popular and also since they just dropped the price from 200 to $150

I agree with you. The Shack had the phone (online price only) at $49 with two years contract. I bet people bought it a lot. I do not care about the others new phones this device has what I need.
:)

Could be the popularity of the Epic, even though it has had a few downfalls due to the slow update to Froyo now that it has Froyo many have renewed interest in the device. Plus since its been made official that the Epic 4g will receive Gingerbread eventually that has many people jumping... Overall the Epic's hardware is excellent and the screen display is still tops in the market (IMO).

If you have your heart dead set on moving to Sprint and getting an Epic 4g, I would hold out a bit longer than jumping on something else you might not be happy with.

I ordered the Epic-brand new, not a refurb, from Radio Shack for 19.99 today-about an hour ago, had called them up. I couldn't pass that up.

My cousin has this phone, I'd looked at it-wanted a Samsung. I went to the Sprint store in my area to look at it further and the screen is very nice, clear. I'd seen HTC's phones and while they are slightly-just a tad wider, the Samsung had the clearest, sharpest, nicest colors, best view.

I'm coming from AT&T, with an LG VU 920. I wanted a bigger screen, something that might not ruin my eyesight as fast lol. I have a new job, we don't have the web, so I use my phone to look at the web-the screen is too small. I also wanted to get away from AT&T's higher prices and possible overage charges.

I hope Sprint keeps their pricing as is. While my bill will be about $25 more/month, I'll have more ability and the larger screen to be able to view. I looked at the Captivate, and while I'm not the biggest texter, I do like the keyboard, it will come in handy for writing when I don't have my laptop or pdas handy.

Looking forward to looking through all things Android, can't wait to get the phone!! :D

You do realize people who care about froyo and gb are a minority right?? Epic sales are in no way affected by anything you just said. The price drop is what did it.

Bloggers and forum dwellers are the only ones who care about that stuff. GB adds nothing the average user cares about. Froyo didn't even provide anything important to the average user aside from a gps fix. I sell the phone and 95% of customers have no clue what I'm talking about when I mention software versions.

I'm proud to be a minority. :D

Hey easy now, I was simply pointing out what many people are interested in. Besides the group of people that are your average consumer and don't pay attention to OS and what it offers there are/is a growing number of people every day that are educating themselves more and more on the internet about what these devices do and what they are capable of and that includes the OS. So my statement does stand true to a certain extent of users.

I also believe a good salesperson with the proper "edge" does educate the consumer on what they are getting and that includes the OS before buying a product. But that is just my take on things. I believe the way Android is being pushed now into the home by every means possible and their aggressive advertising methods you will soon see many people actually taking a bigger interest in what an OS is and what it does on the device. It will go the way of OSX and Windows, years ago nobody cared but now today the average person is very interested in what the next or newest revision is to the software going on their home computer/laptops.

If you want to start a flaming thread/response to my post here I believe your in the wrong forum.

Nobody is going to flame anybody in this thread.

Since I doubt there has been any type of survey/study done on consumer awareness of Android OS versions, we have no empirical evidence - only opinions, and everybody is entitled to theirs.

Sure...people are interested in a devices capabilities...but the move from Froyo to Gingerbread doesnt add any features that the average user will care about/need. Very seldomly are people walking in asking for a phone with Gingerbread or with Froyo. Most of these people want a "Droid" and the "apps". I think many people here hold software versions to a higher standard than the masses are seeing them at as of right now. Most people couldnt tell you one version from the next unless they frequent forums such as ourselves.

Oh...and if offering a differing opinion than yourself is considered "flaming" then I'm sorry. But we are all grown men...we should understand not everyone is going to agree with everything we say. If I came off a little strong in my initial response then I'm sorry...but nobody is "flaming" you...such a loosely used term...

No fire suppressant needed...

I'm sure the price drop has a lot to do with the sales of the Epic 4g. I am also sure there is a handful of people who initially held off on getting the Epic despite its great reviews it was lacking in updates to Froyo so they held off on renewing or went with the EVO and now they are interested in making the switch.. Froyo/Gingerbread/Price Drop=Why wouldn't you buy one?

You are correct on the average customer walking in and saying I want a "Droid". That is what the average users associates Android phones with is the name "Droid". I will say one thing with the recent increase over the last few months of new users/members to all the forums many people are now getting that education on what Android is, does and can be made capable of doing through rooting if your willing to go that far.

As sales reps, advisers, mods, blog writers, etc. I feel its our jobs to help educate those who don't understand all of this. I think the biggest product that will help push Android into the mainstream and begin to finally wake up those who haven't already is the Tablet. Android is making such a strong push with these and getting them involved in every part of the market you could imagine.

Sorry about the flame comment, for whatever reason at that time I went a bit far. Sometimes I think our fingers get us in more trouble than our mouths.. LOL...

Radio Shack web only price with 2 year extended contract in my area is $19.99 - I don't qualify because I am a business account. But no corporate stores can supposedly sell at that price. :( :'(

FYI = being fairly new to an Android phone (just got my Samsung Epic in late February) I was initially drawn to this phone because of ,1) Awesome Screen {better than any other screen IMO}, 2) Apps and 3) soon to be 2.2 {OTA was in the works at the time}. Very soon after getting my phone I discovered Android Central and started reading about the various options I had available for my phone regarding Rooting / ROMing / Theme-ing. Some of my co-workers now have upgraded their phones to the Epic after "playing" with mine and everyone of them did so because they liked the phone , there was no big discount at the time except for the $100.00 mail-in rebate. A couple of them are also thinking about Root/ROM/Theme options as well. This is a REALLY great phone !

Ordered a $19 epic for my g/f from radioshack, now they're out of stock...bummer...hope they get more soon.

Well, everyone that has it cheap (Radio Shack and most online retailers, Nebraska Furniture Mart) were still out of stock, but I did pick two up locally at a Sprint store. Happy so far!

Did the Sprint store match the price? Or what price did you buy them for?

Thanks
