Epic won't boot up after "factory reset"

I have the Epic and my wife the Hero. Tomorrow I'm getting the EVO 3D and giving the Epic to my wife. I called Sprint and switched the phones so that the Epic is already in my wife's line, and put the Hero on my line so that when I go to the store tomorrow I replace the Hero with the EVO 3D etc.

So the switch went fine and the Epic was in my wife's line. I wanted to give the Epic to my wife in stock conditions so I wanted to do a "factory reset" and then let her put it the way she wants.

So I did the reset the soft way (going into menu - privacy - factory reset etc). The phone turned off and started to turn on and got to the screen with the black background and the SAMSUNG logo in big white letters, the same one that first appears when you turn on the phone. However, that same screen was there for like 10 mins and I have done resets before and it never took so long, so I assumed it froze or something. So I pulled the battery, put it back on and turned it on, and again it would get stock on the white logo... I pull out the battery again, put it in, and without turning it on, connected it to the wall charger and you know that if it is off and you connect it to the charger, a big battery icon appears and tells you the battery level in green etc, well, the battery appeared but no level, just like a loading circle and stayed there. I turned on the phone again and let it be on the white SAMSUNG logo thinking that it needed time to reset... Well it's been 1 hour now and it's in the same white logo. It's definitely stuck and I have no way to get it to turn on.

Any help? I'm very confused and scared that somehow I broke my phone even though I wasn't flashing anything, just a reset... Any help is extremely appreciated!

Thanks.

This is a bit advanced but try this... (with the phone off) Hold the volume down, Camera, and power button all at the same time until the capacitive buttons light up... then let go. Now your in the recovery mode. Use the volume keys to scroll down to wipe data/facory reset. Hit the home key then volume up. This will reset it again if it doesn't work you can try Odin.

Thanks for the response.

I'm not home right now but when I get home I will try your suggestion.

Now, assuming it doesn't work (I'm hoping it does!), you suggested to use Odin, what should I do with Odin?

Thanks.

Reply to this thread if it doesn't work and I'll go into more detail. You can use Odin the reflash the Bios and EC05 stock 2.2. I've brought many Epics back to life with this as long as its not hardware related. Software can almost always be fixed :)

If you do have to go the Odin route assuming the factory reset in the stock recovery doesn't work then go to the following link. Select procedure #1 for Froyo EC05 and follow the instructions. If you have any problems or questions please post them in that thread and myself or someone will help you out. In case your wondering about Odin, this is a leaked program that Samsung uses. It is put on your computer and using selected "tar" files you download it will completely wipe and reflash your device back to stock/factory OS. The same program is also used by the rooting and hacking community to install/flash ROMs, kernels and modems on the device.

Thanks for the help guys.

With the phone off, I did as suggested: volume down, power and camera button

I got like a white box with an arrow to a little android green guy and after a few seconds it booted up. It never went into recovery mode, but it did boot up correctly which is what I wanted.

Thanks!

I do like how robust these are as far as hacking goes. Seems pretty hard to brick.

It is extremely difficult to fully brick an Epic. The lowest level of the device is "download mode", and from there, ODIN can be used to put back the full stock os, including stock recovery if THAT managed to get messed up. And even if you can't get to download mode, there is a reset hole in the back ((just to the bottom left of the camera lens under the battery cover that is said to restore even that ability. So... really the only true way to brick an Epic, is to hit it with a brick.

makes me more comfortable with the idea of getting into roms again, I used to with treo's and winmo and the pre was easy to mess with.
