eSIM and International Travel

This may be a noob question but...I've never done it myself but it's my understanding is that if you travel abroad (I live in the US) you can buy a SIM card from wherever it is you are traveling to not have to pay ridiculous roaming data fees but rather whatever the local rates are for residents there (loosely). How would this work with the Pixel 2 and the eSIM?

You can still use a traditional SIM card on the Pixel 2 line. Didn't Project Fi include data roaming abroad, though? T-Mobile does, and IIRC some carriers followed suit (maybe it was just Sprint?). Anyway, I digress...yes, you can still use a traditional SIM card when roaming.
