essential weird design choice?

There are literally hundreds of phones designed how I described because that design makes sense. The same can't be said for the Essential phone.

The icons don't tuck anymore more neatly than they would in a standard sized status bar. Now they're just surrounded by extra space. For no real reason. Google Maps stretching to the top doesn't offer any real benefit to the user. It makes you say, "wow," and, "cool," but your eyes ultimately focus on the center of the screen.

I fail to see any reason for the screen to stretch through the camera other than to get a reaction from Doge. "Wow. Much cool. Many screen."

There just isn't any real benefit. Full screen videos are all cut off and apps just have a double sized status bar. What's the point? You don't get more screen, you get more status bar and you don't even get to use all of the status bar.

You do get more screen because the status bar is taking up that space next to the camera instead of below it. To do what you want, have a top bezel, then either the screen would be shorter and the status bar would be below it, or they would have to make the phone taller.

With the way it is, it maximizes the screen use on this body size.

If you run the screen right to the bottom that means either the software buttons are un-ergonomically low or you raise them and then have dead space below them. So if you have some components that you need to put at one edge of the screen (usually true with LCDs), the bottom is a sensible place to put them.

If the asymmetry offends, then this isn't the phone for you. Personally I like it, but aesthetics are personal.

You get more status bar, not more screen.

The amount of extra screen space you get is negligible. A few extra millimeters at the top of the screen that your eyes don't focus on anyway. Where it would matter most, in full screen apps and video, you're actually getting less screen.

No, it's the same unless you make the phone taller to add that extra top bezel, and even then you really won't get much more because most video is 16:9 and the top and bottom will be black anyways, unless your the type of person that prefers zoomed in video but then you cut off the top and bottom to do that.
