There are literally hundreds of phones designed how I described because that design makes sense. The same can't be said for the Essential phone.
The icons don't tuck anymore more neatly than they would in a standard sized status bar. Now they're just surrounded by extra space. For no real reason. Google Maps stretching to the top doesn't offer any real benefit to the user. It makes you say, "wow," and, "cool," but your eyes ultimately focus on the center of the screen.
I fail to see any reason for the screen to stretch through the camera other than to get a reaction from Doge. "Wow. Much cool. Many screen."
There just isn't any real benefit. Full screen videos are all cut off and apps just have a double sized status bar. What's the point? You don't get more screen, you get more status bar and you don't even get to use all of the status bar.
You do get more screen because the status bar is taking up that space next to the camera instead of below it. To do what you want, have a top bezel, then either the screen would be shorter and the status bar would be below it, or they would have to make the phone taller.
With the way it is, it maximizes the screen use on this body size.
