I have an S8+. I get occasional single default-tone beeps (which I try not to use for any app) and also occasional short vibrations. When this happens, I can't see indication of any app that gave me such an alert.

Yep, it does still happen. I've actually never had NFC turned on.

I haven't yet checked your safe mode suggestion, but I just realized that even when all sounds except ring tone are turned off (via the button on the left side and as confirmed on-screen), an arriving Gmail still causes a vibration. I do have Gmail set to vibrate when an email arrives, but I would have thought that turning off all sounds would override that. I guess not.

I finally made progress on this: I found that when I turn off all Gmail notifications, I no longer get untraceable beeps and vibrations. But still, when I leave Gmail notifications on, I get beeps and tones at times when there is no new email.

Have you recently changed the password for any email account? Or have you added a new account in the Gmail app? It's possible that beep is related to an account not being able to sync on the Gmail app.

You could try creating a widget for the notification log and see if you can get more information next time you get this sound. Unfortunately this is not so easy on Samsung devices and you'd need to use a third part app, like More Shortcuts, or a custom launcher, like Nova, to create the widget.
