EVO and Swype

Thanks for the instructions on downloading swype, I'm using it now and I'm lovin' it! I'll never go back to a regular keyboard.

I don't see what's all the hubbub about this thing. Lots of things wrong with it:

A. Steep learning curve.
B. Absolutely horrible if you need decent punctuation.
C. If your word isn't in the dictionary, you're screwed. Your speed will go to hell just from breaking the flow there.
D. Much slower in landscape; your fingers have to go much further.
E. Even harder to use when walking.
F. Requires a whole different way of thinking, since it requires you to think about how to spell a word. Normal writing/typing doesn't involve that action.

It's not that steep of a learning curve. I'm using SlideIT because I don't want to jack with putting Swype on and it's taken me a couple hours to get completely comfortable with it. I don't text in landscape so that's not an issue. It's too far for my fingers even for regular texting. I don't know about SWYPE, but with SlideIT you can add the word to the dictionary. It's not any harder to walk and text this way than regular texting. I personally always think about spelling regardless. I think everyone should.

I think the only point that you have that I agree with is possibly the punctuation. It works fine, but slows you down.

for those of you using swype on the you, do you notice it draining your battery? maybe i j ust think my battery is draining fast because im still on my "honeymoon" but just was seeing if swype would effect battery life..

It's steep because it works entirely different.

You can add words to the dictionary of course, but that breaks the flow when suddenly you have to type out these words. And it makes it more difficult as time goes on, as the dictionary becomes cluttered with these one-off words, it predicts incorrectly. Texting while walking is nearly impossible due to how your fingers will bounce around. As swype relies on those paths, you could do any number of errors, including capitals, wrong words, incorrect autocompletion, etc.

Also, I don't think you understood what I meant about spelling. It's not about striving to spell a word correctly. When you type on a pc keyboard, do you even give it a moment's thought as to how you are spelling that word? I don't. I don't think anyone does. But you have to with Swype. It doesn't click like that.

Keep in mind that our brains don't really care about order, something that Swype demands accuracy in. You cuold esaliy raed tihs snetnece for isnatnce, dsepite transposing the letters.

wow i am very very impressed with swype. you can pretty miss all the letters in a 8 letter word by a centimeter and it'll still figure out what you were trying to say 99% of the time... whoever made this deserves a nobel prize. also, the current world record for fastest texter belongs to a swype user.

features I would like see added:
1. voice to text button
2. toggle between swype mode and multitouch mode

An update to Swype beta was released today (for those on the beta list). Does anybody know what the changes are?

ok I've used SlideIT, Shapewriter and Swype................swype wins by a landslide. accuracy on swype is untouchable.

the text to voice on the HTC sense Evo keyboard......the mic... you don't need to type...it does it for you...

Yeah and if you get the HTC IME keyboard (look online) and install it via Astro File Manager when you put it on the SD card...
... It capitilizes the first letter of the sentence when you're doing voice to text.

Sure you can read it. But it's ugly. And your argument holds true for a desktop situation, but we're talking about a soft keyboard for a device thats at most 6 inches wide.

Here's the deal. If you are a touch-typist (hands on the home row!) Swype will drive you crazy. If you are a hunt-and-peck typist, Swype will seem like the second coming. I've been using a computer keyboard forever (like 30 years) and I still look at the keys. I tried to learn touch typing but it never felt right to me. I get the odd 'teh' and 'thnaks' but it's obviously not holding me back from writing lengthy rants. Besides, I prefer to proofread anyway. Defiantly. :)

I've only owned Palm smartphones with the QWERTY, and I recently moved to an EVO. Until I got Swype I really missed the QWERTY and hated the android/sense soft keyboard. Now I actually enjoy texting with it.

My only complaints are no voice text button and no cursor control. swype+driving=death.

Anyone have trouble with swype not working when rebooting your htc evo? I have to switch keyboards to get my beta swype working... I have registered version of swype and running damage control 3.5

I had this happen earlier this week.... I had to switch to stock and back to Swype to get the Swype part to work.

First time though as I typically like to reboot my phone every couple of weeks...

Weird..

I reboot my phone multiple times an day to switch my batteries out.... Ever time my swype keyboard won't respond... I have to select stock, then back to stock to get it to work. I deleted swype and the installer and still doing the same thing, very annoying on reboot every time.
