EVO Battery Charging, Phone charging ON vs OFF, Green light doesn't mean full charge?

This is a question I can't find searching through the threads. I know that turning the EVO off and then charging, is faster. But, when the green light turns on, it isn't really fully charged. I have noticed that if I charge the phone on the off mode, even though the phone says it is charged, it is not. Yesterday, I charged the phone in the off mode and when the green light came on, I unplugged the charger, turned the phone on right away, and it said it was at 95%, not 100%. Why would it be green, if it wasn't charged. I use battery indicator pro to see exact charge rate. So, to get to 100%, I have to plug the phone back into the charger (the one that comes with the phone), with the phone on, to get it to 100%.

I am not sure if it is my battery(stock battery) causing these problems, or the misreporting of Battery Indicator PRO.

I have also notice even if I get it to 100% at night, and then shut it off right away after the phone is charged. The next morning, when I turn it on, it is at 96 to 98%.

Do I have a bad battery, or is this normal?

Do you charge your phone with the phone on or off?

If you have it off, when the screen goes green, is your phone really 100% charged.

Can the battery really get overcharged, so when you take it off the charger, the percentage drops drastically?

This is by design. Smart batteries will attempt to not charge when they're ~95% or higher. You can test this on your laptop, it will act similarly.
 
Like Vincent says, LI batteries last far longer (not each day, but total lifetime) if they're not brought to full charge, or discharged too far. Electric cars with LI batteries try to stay between 25% and 75% for that reason (of course, the battery for your EVO doesn't cost $20,000, so you can be a little less careful). But I suspect ETC has built a little safety margin in place, because LI batteries really don't like to be overcharged.

As far as draining while the phone is off, well, I'm not sure it's ever truly "off." I think it's always using a trickle of current to maintain the state of certain things.

As for my phone, I charge it while it's on. I never turn my phone off unless I've decided to reboot it for some reason. I put it on the charger when I go to bed, take it off when I get up. On the AC charger, when I check the battery immediately after turning on the screen it's typically at 97 to 98%. If I charge it from a computer on the USB cable, it's at 99 to 100%. It drops to 95 to 96% over the next 30 minutes.

One thing to consider: If your phone has been off, when you turn it on the first thing it's going to do is try to access all the things it normally does in the background, right away. Syncing email and facebook, and the google calendar; updating things like weather apps and news feeds. Determining your location. All of those things are going to eat up battery. If your phone's been on while charging, it keeps doing those things in the background, and doesn't have to do them all at once on power up. You're probably using MORE battery by turning the phone off.
 
Youre battery is fine. This morning I took my phone off charge, took two minutes to check twitter and facebook, and I was down to 93% from "100%" battery. I assume the battery indicator reads 100% while it is plugged it, then takes a few minutes to adjust itself to the true battery percentage level. For the past few days I have been taking it off the charger when I first wake up, check my twitter, facebook, texts, emails. Then I plug my evo back up and let it charge back to 100% before I go on with my day. With this method the battery drain is much more gradual from 100% to 90%, and much more linear throughout the day.
 
The way this phone is just damn retarded. I'm down 25% battery and just plugged in the charger. Well I go and reboot my phone with the charger in and the phone jumps to 52% charged. I'm sure this is what causes ppl to think the phone battery sucks, because I know when I get to 100% and take the phone off the charger the battery will go down turbo fast since that wasn't really the real percentage.
 
Once it reaches 100%, the phone stops charging, even if it's still plugged it. So it uses energy while it's just sitting there. I can think of one thread that talks about this. I'll try to find it.
 
There must be a way to bypass this without having to take plug out and plug it back in.
 
when i think back to my battery monitor on my palm pre i remember it having 2 numbers for the battery %. one was the actual and the other was like the reported battery or something like that. could it possibly be that most or all phones actually do this but these battery widgets or apps are showing us the actual battery % as opposed to other phones which will show a fake %?
those of us former pre owners that used the battery monitor app probably know what im talking about.
 
Battery #'s

The battery icon seems to stay green between 90 and 100%. I use Battery Droid widget on my homescreen this seems to be pretty accurate.
 
Thank you for someone finally confirming that the evo is the same as the nexus, the green light means 90%. This is intentional on all HTC phones, but if you don't have a battery widget on your home screen then you won't notice this.

After looking this morning, let me clarify. When the phone is charging it seems to stay orange until it hits 100%. Once it's at full charge it turns green and stops charging and anything running will start pulling juice. The light seems to stay green until it drops below 90%. So, if you let your phone charge completely then left it sitting for a while it could easily show something less that 100%.
