Evo for dummies, rooting and wireless tether ?'s

I just rooted my EVO 4g using z4root 1.3.0 (temp root) and I'm using Wireless Tether 2_0_6. I'm running stock ROM and software 3.70.651.1 My laptop connects to my phone via wireless tether. In the notification bar a red shield with a white 'x' inside pops up and says Wireless Tether - Authorized. It doesn't seem like there is any data transfer as I cannot open any web pages. In settings I am using Channel 01 (2412MHz) and LAN-Network 192.168.1.0/24. I have confirmed that my phone is rooted, through Titanium and the Superuser app. Even when I started the tethering app for the first time it granted me Su permissions. I am going to try again with Access Control unchecked and unchecking WiFi Encryption. If this doesn't work I am going to try the previous version of Wireless Tether 2.0.5.

You told us that:
- The app is running
- configured for the 192.168.1/24 subnet
- Channel 1

Here are my questions for troubleshooting:
- Do you get an IP address on the device/laptop? If so, what's the address?
- If IP address is received from DHCP from the phone, what is the Gateway?
- If you have the gateway, and it's configured correctly for the phone's internal (hotspot network) address, is it pingable?

If you can ping the gateway (the phone), congratulations, the phone and laptop is setup correctly for your own mini-hotspot network.

Next:
- Is 4.2.2.2 pingable?
- What DNS servers does your laptop get?
- Are the DNS servers pingable?

If all of the above is true, then you do in fact have internet connectivity.

If you failed the ping tests, Next:
-What firewall or network security software do you have running? Mcafee? Windows Firewall? anything else?
-Disable all firewalls and repeat the ping tests above

If that doesn't work, try restarting your device, but with the hotspot network SSID remembered such that it will default the connection to that network first.

If that didn't work, try to connect a different device and repeat all tests.

Once you do all that... at whichever point you fail, it will help us determine what the root cause is.

*note: For anything here, finding out how to do it is easily searchable via google. I'm not going to post steps because it can be found on the internetz in probably better detail than I'm willing to describe.

Well, it matters a little, mainly when coupled with no punctuation like the aforementioned poster. ;)

I do agree that spelling matters... it doesn't have to be perfect, but the goal is to at least spell well enough so that people can understand you.

For example, enuff, and similar shorthand is readily understandable but if something is illegible, it's kinda useless.

Thanks for all the info npark!

I just tried to connect using version 2.0.6 before I went through with your instructions and it connected instantly even with using encryption. I guess my laptop needed to be rebooted after I set up the SSID. Or it could of been because I uninstalled and reinstalled the tethering app too.

On another note, I seem to lose speed when tethering. My Evo reports download speeds between 8-10mbs with 4g using the speedtest app. When I am tethered, I ran the test with my laptop at speedtest.net on the web, it reports around 4-5mbs. They both report pings around 115-120. Not sure why.
