hello all :)

i purchased a used evo from ebay recently - it had the reboot issue, and i was under the assumption it was a stock phone. (i needed a replacement, my optimus has water damage and isn't working correctly, plus my upgrade isn't until november) - i'd read online that if you do a factory reset it cures the reboot issue - so i figured i'd try that first. when i did the first reset (power + vol down) i got an odd screen, looked like my recovery screen on my optimus. i just figured maybe different phone meant different screens. come to find out the original owner attempted to root, and failed. plus, no recovery!

after a few hours the phone was successfully rooted - and i first put lewa on it. i've tried many different roms but i have the same issue - all roms crash within 10 hours of being on. i get freezes, reboots (and they stick on the white start up screen), and odd glitches as well. could this be a problem beyond rooting? i've tried cm7, cm9, lewa, mikg (currently running, it's been going the longest), even a stock rom. no luck. i've updated kernels too. any suggestions?

(and, a fun note, it was fun trying to activate the phone with cm7 on it - had to flash back to a stock rom while on the phone with sprint, stalling was a fun time lol)

have you run the vipermod superwipe? factory reset would fix the issue (or one would think) and have you noticed any apps running before the phone crashes? Kinda tough to monitor that type of thing, i know, but just a thought.

Wipe everything completely (data/cache/dalvik cache) before flashing a stable rom. Don't flash any kernels. I would give MikG 3.11 a try again and let it settle in before flashing kernels or anything else.

sorry for being so slow - i've been trying every suggestion you guys have done. the current recovery is revolution/clockwork. i'll attempt the amon ra later to see if it'd help.

another issue - the darn phone will not stay off. when you boot it up, it gets stuck at the white evo screen. usually requiring a few pulls to finally get to boot. whenever you just want to leave it for a while, it turns back on by itself within 15-20 minutes, and if you don't notice it the phone will get very hot very quick (an issue i had when i could get it to boot, if you had a good charge, even full, and the phone started this endless freeze/reboot cycle, after you finally get a boot up - sometimes only a couple of times, sometimes more, the battery will be almost completely depleted. i know the battery is okay, i stumbled across another one on ebay and the battery works wonderfully in it).

what it boils down to is could it be a physical problem with this phone? could the internal memory be damaged?

Yes, kind of. It takes a bit to actually damage memory. But it doesn't take much to damage it from water.
I've worked retail cellular, it takes a few seconds to completely destroy a phone. Sadly, externally you will never know. If your ambitious you could take a look inside.
Typical water damage will turn resistors white or rusty looking. If the board has any marks, it will show.
This is what it sounds like IMO, an its not fixable.

Best suggestion is look for an RUU, a real one and flash that. It will un-root the phone, sorry.
But you will know for sure if its a rom issue or a phone issue.
Hope this helps

Or, when you more than likely flashed a wrong kernel, it may have fried the CPU.
