EVO Rooted!

I understand what root access is in the pure sense. But what benefit do you get as a standard users. Does it release the use of apps that are blocked by Sprint? and does it make the phone less users friendly for average users?

Obtaining root access doesn't do anything visually to the phone. It allows you to write onto the /system/ folder of the internal memory, which was blocked before. Its because of this, you can then:
Flash a custom recovery image --> which allows you to flash custom ROMs for the Evo
Delete useless Sprint apps like Nascar WOO!
Use root only apps like wifi tether app
