Evo vs iPhone 4 vs Vibrant vs Droid X!

Yeah that wasn't really all that... More a vague run down of each phone than any thing else.

I was an iPhone user for two years because I was under contract. I don't know enough about the iPhone 4 but I had the iPhone 3G and it was a decent phone. AT&T sucked (at least for me and where I live, work and play) So finally I made the move to Android and got a Nexus One.. Loved that phone... Still my favorite phone but T-Mobile was HORRIBLE!!! Oh my lord.... Their HSPA+ network is awesome but very tiny and their overall 3G coverage area is horrible.... I live in Nashville, TN and as long as your IN NASHVILLE your fine... Go 10 miles out of town in any direction and your on Edge or worse..... Between Nashville and Memphis (200 miles) I actually roam for over 1/2 the drive where as with Sprint I have full 3G coverage for 90% of the drive and roam 3G the rest... T-Mobiles plans when you pay for the phone outright are awesome... Unlimited Talk, Text and Web for only $79.99 per month? Seemed like a deal until your roaming or getting no signal most of the time. I actually pay less with Sprint because with the Even More Plus plan at T-Mobile I didn't get my corporate discount but with Sprint I get a discount so it's cheaper... and with Any Mobile Any Time I don't need any thing more than the $69.99 plan....

That said the EVO is my second favorite phone after the Nexus One... The N1 had an almost perfect blend of screen size, weight and thinness that made it a great phone... But network choices sucked... Don't get me wrong.. The EVO is a damn close second.. If I had to pick between the Nexus One and The EVO both on the Sprint network it would be a very tight and close call.... Was bummed when Sprint announced they would not carry the Nexus One..

But I am 100% happy with my EVO.... The main knock on the EVO vs the Nexus One was it's size.. but since June 4th I have adjusted 100% to the EVO and it's larger size and weight...

It really does not matter how great the phone is if the network sucks where you live, work and play.....

Epic vs Evo vs Hero (new smartphone user)

I'm new to the whole smartphone thing, so I could use a recommendation. I currently have a Samsung Exclaim (messaging phone). I need to replace it relatively soon because the keyboard slider isn't really working anymore. I've never used a smartphone before, so I am not sure that I really care about the physical keyboard (plus I am a little skeptical of the quality of the keyboard slider given my current situation).

I don't really plan on gaming much. I may stream video and run assorted applications. I'll probably use the camera a little bit, in lieu of my usual camera.

I actually really like the Hero, but I'm a little leary of getting something so "old". I think the 4G phones are probably a little overkill for me, but there doesn't seem to be much coming in the 3G only space on Sprint.

I'm not really sure which one I want to get - any suggetsions/recommendations? I know the Epic isn't out yet but other Galaxy S phones are. Price really isn't that big a deal for me, though I would obviously prefer to spend less. I should probably mention that I need to stay with Sprint because I am mid-contract and am taking advantage of the Premier upgrade. I'm not sure this is the right forum either, sorry if it's the wrong one. Thanks for any help.

If you ask in the Evo forum what answer do you expect? personally I would og with the Epic.

Yeah, it's probably not the smartest of ideas to post it here if I am looking for some objectivity. :)

I say wait until the Epic is released and go to a Sprint store and get a hands on with both the Evo and Epic. Personally, I think Touchwiz is virtual herpes. It's horrible in every stretch of the imagination. But the screen is absolutely amazing, has gotten really good reviews for its keyboard, has gotten really good reviews about it's build quality and it does have a better processor. The Evo may not be as powerful, but it does have a great screen too, still very fast, has a front facing camera, kickstand (no it's not a gimmick, I use it every day multiple times) has HTC's Sense UI which is light years ahead of Touchwiz, better camera. Also keep in mind, Samsung isn't known to to suport their phones very well. The Evo already has 2.2. As a matter of fact they come preloaded with 2.2 now. I wonder if Samsung even knows when 2.2 is gonna come out for the Galaxy phones. It all vomes down to personal preference. I say just wait until the Epic comes out and get a hands on. Back when I was torn between the Hero, Moment and Pre, it took about 1 second after touching the Pre for me to know it wasn't for me. And a little while before I chose the Hero over the Moment. Up until that day I was almost dead set on the Pre...

The EVO AND Epic are both great, very powerful devices. The Hero is getting a bit old, but isn't a bad first smartphone (my son has one, it's really a cute device) - If you're on the Premier Plan, then you can upgrade again in a year.

The best thing to do is spend time playing with all three. If the EVO and Epic seem too big, the Hero is still a viable choice for the needs you indicated.

Personally I would stay away from the Hero. I LOVED that phone. I recently just gave my old one to my brother actually so he can get rid of his Instinct. He's gonna be upgrading to the Evo soon. When I was helping him get set up I asked myself if I was just that spoiled from using the Evo or it was just that slow. Then I had flashbacks... it's dreadfully slow. Lag like you wouldn't believe after the 2.1 update. It's still a good phone for the price. 50 bucks at Radio Shack. But if you're considering a $250 Epic $200 Evo, I'd stay away from the Hero. There's literally not one benefit to going with the Hero.

What exactly is horrible about touchwiz? A;; I saw was 4 icons on the home screen and the application list does not scroll down unless you change the settings. I don't get what is so horrible about that.

Ya I was surprised. It really seemed like the Evo came up on top. There were no real cons about the phone itself except the size which can easily be a plus for most people. I've had hands on with all of these phone. I've had hands on with the iPhone 4 (again today at an Apple store in which I got kicked out of.. thread of that in a few lol) the Droid X, Vibrant. I have to say I'm very happy with my purchase. Aside from this damn 2.2 being buggy as all hell, I haven't really had any complaints. The iPhone 4 is just garbage in my opinion. I'm sorry but it really is. It's such a BORING phone. Folders and icons? That's it? Seriously? Browser sucks, ZERO customization, can barely make a phone call despite it being... a phone, no way to upgrade storage, the list can go on and on. I just don't get the hoopla about it at all. The Droid X is really good. Not a fan of the UI but it's miles ahead of Touchwiz.. Which brings me to the Vibrant.. Great screen, very light though feels kind of cheap, very good processor, WAY smoother than the Evo, but sweet mother of god... Touchwiz.. It's so so so so bad. Everything about Touchwiz is just horrible. I mean, to make a UI that bad you have to try to make it that bad. Maybe I'm being too harsh but holy hell it's bad lol... But to each their own. I love Sense and some people hate it with a passion. So it all comes down to personal preference... Which is why I think Noah backed off from saying a clear winner. Cuz I guess it's kind of hard. Except with the iPhone.. It sucks... sorry...

I sort of agree with you, but not to the extent you do. I think that the EVO is the best out of the lot, but the other phones are really great too. Starting with the new iPhone, I would say it is the best looking device I have ever seen. It's hardware is crazy nice. I don't think that the phone itself is boring seeing as though you can pretty much do the same things on it that you can with the EVO. But the UI has become very stale. I'm not sure what the complaint about it being used as a phone is about. I had an iPhone and didn't have any issues with calls. But I will say that overall, the device is not as good as the EVO. The Droid X is probably the closest thing to the EVO, but comes up short in my opinion because of no front facing camera or 4G. I haven't spent much time with the vibrant, but from what I have experienced with the UI, it really isn't as bad as people say. Again, I don't think that it is as good as the Sense UI, but it isn't bad. Um sure there are a lot of Galaxy S users out there that truly love the UI. The hardware specs are great. If I had anyone of these devices, I would be happy. But I do think that I own the best of the bunch.
