I'm currently trying to set up an ActiveSync account on my Nexus 6. Since the email app is now Gmail and Gmail doesn't seem to support ActiveSync, I'm trying to figure out how to get this to work on my Nexus 6. Any ideas/recommendations?
The Gmail app does support Exchange Active Sync. I've had my work email configured on here since I got the phone. Works fine. Only syncs email, calendar, and contacts tho, no tasks.

Yup. Gmail even supports the security profiles in EAS - my corp pushed the phone wipe and other settings and Gmail notified me and forced me to accept the controls from within the app.
The OP may not have the preboot authentication enabled which some Exchange systems require. This is when the phone won't unencrypt and boot into the OS until a 4 digit pin is entered.
Just so you know there is a huge thread of people having issues with EAS and Android 5.0. I was one of them... took three weeks and working with other IT teams to figure what was up. See the link: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=79389
I've compiled some of the fixes that worked for me on #98. Although being that I work with the IT teams in my environment I was able to help find the fix for us. It seems everyone has a different issue. Any one who doesn't have the access to backend resources like myself ended up using mail clients like Nine to get this problem fixed.
