Exchange and Gmail Solutions

I said this in your previous thread - linked here, but I'll say it again - gmail itself supports exchange, so if you set your gmail up, in the default mail program on our evo, or on k-9, or something else if you find something else, anything that supports exchange, you will get gmail push.

here is another link to the setup instructions (for iphone, but they work fine), as someone else previously said, using m.google.com as the server is key. setup instructions

Is this not working for you?

I understand what you are saying but I guess my new question(s) is/are;

1) Does the stock HTC mail app support multiple exchange accounts, I can only seem to be able to add one (My current work EAS)

and

2) If Yes to the above question, how does one setup a secondary Exchange account.

^^^
For some people this solution will not work because the current version of Android only supports ONE Exchange Active Sync account.

Using the Gmail IMAP solution is the next best thing.

It is my understanding that this uses a version of Push Mail technology that is specific to Google. The phone also does polling at whichever interval you select as well. This polling option is IMPOSSIBLE to disable but you can set the interval to once per day. Give it a try.

Android actually does support multiple exchange accounts. HTC's Mail application does not (why they would remove something like that I don't understand).

So thanks to HTC and their Sense implementation, we are stuck...

Interesting, Jaysen and Wirelessness are spot on. I didn't catch the limitation of one exchange account since my non-gmail account that I'm using is imap only. Sorry for missing that.

What I can confirm, now that I've done some testing, is setting gmail up as imap push in k-9 gets you messages within seconds of being sent (writing myself test messages from my desktop and watching them show up on the phone)

Doing the same in the default client, I don't get that immediate response.

Edege,

That is perfectly acceptable way of using the device and the email clients. I've done it that may and sometimes toggle between the two methods. I just wanted to be clear that enabling IMAP and using the Mail App for Gmail does NOT merge your Exchange email and the Gmail in the same Inbox in anyway that's all.

Oh yeah, that is definitely true!

I hope I did not add to any confusion.

I found a link to download the stock email client. I'm not posting it, as I have no idea what the status of it is (I mean, it comes with android, but was removed by htc) playing around with it, it looks like it solves some of these problems.

It definitely supports imap idle for gmail that works with realtime push, and allows for an exchange client over top of it.

But, it's fatal flaw is that it only supports imap idle for gmail accounts. Any other account will have to be exchange, or resign itself to getting checked every x minutes.

So, here's my summary of the opitions:

The stock android account (which wasn't included) will let you have an exchange account and gmail push together complete with unified inbox if you want it, as will k9. But, if you have 2 imap accounts you want to push, you're out of luck. Per Cruisin, the stock account will also let you have 2 exchange accounts going.

HTC mail doesn't seem to be very good at pushing gmail in my testing, but in theory it should work with one exchange plus gmail. It doesn't let have two exchange accounts, and doesn't seem to have a setting for imap idle for non-gmail accounts. No unified inbox, if that matters to you.

K-9 (which is a fork of the stock email client) should let you have more than one exchange account, (although I was really struggling in setting up gmail as exchange after going back to test all of this out). It will do imap push on both accounts, which for my purposes, let's me get to my gmail and another private email address within seconds of a mail being sent. Also has unified inbox like stock.

Someone let me know if I can post it, and I will.

I'd like to have one app, but for a different reason: I can't edit GMail drafts using the built-in mail app. I'm in the same boat as the OP: Exchange for work, GMail for personal. I'm actually using GMail drafts as "to-do" lists because I can then edit them anywhere (on my laptop, on my phone, on my desktop, at work, at a friends house, etc.).

I did this because you can't edit Google Docs, which blows me away given we have a Google OS :(

Exchange != IMAP

So does K-9 support Exchange (aka MAPI) or IMAP? They are NOT the same at all. IMAP is "pull", not "push" so it eats battery.

EDIT: to clarify, IMAP != P-IMAP (push-IMAP) so if K-9 supports P-IMAP that distinction should be made.

I'd love to give the stock mail app a try...

I'm hoping to accomplish the following;

If it supports multiple Exchange accounts then perhaps I can setup my Gmail (for push) as an "Exchange" using the m.google.com server, my work as an exchange (for push), then my alternate email as an IMAP (pull).

I wanna go through all this trouble not because I want my emails instantly (however this is an added benefit), to conserve battery on having to constantly poll from the server ever X minutes.

I have three email accounts, 2 are extremely important that I receive notifications instantly and the other could be every hour or two.

I'm in the exact same boat as jaysen. All I want is my work Exchange account and my personal Gmail account to be accessible via one applications and both be pushed.

I tried K9 but couldn't set my Exchange up with it (doesn't seem to support push for Exchange account).

I tried Seven, but they never sent me the SMS to download the app (bastards!).

Please PM me the stock mail application if possible.

Thanks!
