Executing APKs from the SD card using a file manager

Today, a co-worker sent me an APK of an application to install on my phone. I put the APK on my SD card, opened up Astro File Manager, clicked on it, and installed it. It worked without a hitch. My question; when updates are released for this particular app, will I be eligible? Or am I only eligible for automated app updates if I acquired it directly from Market?
