Does anyone know how to exit Music Player completely? I've noticed that even if I back out of it or kill it through the task list, it shows at the top of the home screen as being open and paused on whatever song I last listened to.

When you're in the app, press the menu key and click end :)

I'd suggest going into settings and into the application manager, and flip over to "running apps". You can find it in the queue of apps that are running, bring it up by tapping it, and then press "Stop". You may have to do that twice, but that will stop it. I've also had that problem, where I kill something in using the task manager, but it keeps running in the background. That means that it's still among the running processes and you have to use the application manager in settings to stop it from running. There are probably other ways to do this, but this way works well for me.

Pull down horizontal toolbar menu from top the screen - press & hold on the music player, once it's highlighted, swipe it to the right - poof gone
