Explain The Fee: "Premium Data"

I can't believe its taking Amazon this long to produce an app similar to the one they released on the iPhone. The larger real estate of the EVO would be ideal for reading on the go.

I know I cant believe it either. B&N even has an app out on WebOS now

I'm passing on it for several reasons: the upcharge for 4G that I don't have access to is idiotic, Sprint's service in my area is as bad as ATTs, and lastly for whatever reason (processors maybe?) the Android phones can't seem to handle games like the iPhone can, and I find myself playing a ton of games on my wife's 3GS. I'd also be more inclined to get one if Kindle and BN had apps out already. I can't believe its taking Amazon this long to produce an app similar to the one they released on the iPhone. The larger real estate of the EVO would be ideal for reading on the go.

To each his own.... I was a 2 year iPhone carrying AT&T customer. The $10 upcharge is NOT for 4G it's for truly unlimited 3G/4G data. Even with the $10 upcharge for the exact same plan your $10 cheaper than AT&T and an iPhone plan.......

Exactly the problem with all iPhone supporters.... They point to the $10 upcharge and even with it your still cheaper.... The gaming I understand. The iPhone has a much better gaming platform than Android does right now. But for me personally I don't play a ton of games. I have a few but they are all for my kids to play with and they are 7 and 5 so they are not overly concerned about graphics and what not.....

Where I live Sprint is a better option than AT&T... My wife had her Blackberry on Sprint and she always got better signals and coverage than I got with my iPhone in all the same places we are in.

are we still complaining about the EVO tax? you could always get any other android device and not pay it but you will be subject to other limitations on those carriers such as an OVERPRICED plan

What if you DO NOT use unlimited data?

I know a lot of people that don't even come close to 5gb, why would they need to pay for unlimited?

it is like any other product, if you dont like it dont buy it!
i dont use that much data or minute but i also dont have to worry about an obscene bill either

i dont like paying the extra $10 a month either but on the other hand why does everyone think it is a ripp off? my first cell phone was $80 a month and i remember when we got a whopping 100 minutes a month for that

You pay for either unlimited minutes or a limit on your minutes... I can't remember the last time I went OVER my minutes.... but if you have 450 minutes and only use 100 you don't get any kind of credit? Same with the unlimited talk and texting..... What if you only use 100 minutes on an unlimited plan and only send/receive 10 text a month.

Same thing..... Unlimited is different for each user.....

BUT you get a choice of how many minutes you want. Give them a choice of what they want to pay extra.

Wrong, there never was a cap on cell phone data usage. Only for broadband and air cards. The $10 charge is realistically there for one of two reasons. 1. To subsidize the price of the phone to keep it at a level that most people can afford ($199 for new customers and upgrades) or 2. to help subsidize the expansion of Sprint's 4g service. Or it could be a combination of both, but we will never know as Sprint can't say its for 4g and still charge people who don't live in 4g areas (most of Sprint customers don't live in 4g markets). Of course Sprint isn't going to disclose the details of its contract with HTC on how exactly this phone is subsidized. Either way Sprint is not being upfront and honest about this charge and what it is for which is pissing a lot of people off.

what does the reason matter maybe it is a bonus for ceo's if you dont wanna pay it dont buy it. go get an iphone and get raped on your monthly bill

Not on T-Mobile! =]

T-Mobile contract free Even More Plus plan is usually $59.99/mo, but you just drop the text messaging to bring it to $49.99/mo and send free text messages through Google Voice.

Contract free and $720 cheaper (contract wise) over Sprints plan...

I have never shopped t mobile. i have unlimited everything and it is far cheaper on sprint then anywhere else. and i hardly text if you wanan talk to me call me

Most of us will gladly pay extra for something as long as we are getting something extra for our money. So far all most of us see is an extra fee with no extra service. There are cheaper options out there like T-mobile and Sprint could take a lot more of their competitor's business if they would just either justify the fee, or remove it.

Sprint can spin it all they want. They say it's not a 4G charge because they wouldn't be able to charge all the people who don't live in a 4G area and open themselves up to a class action law suit. Like I stated earlier they should have just announced new service plans. Change the $69.99 and 99.99 plans to a capped data plan and then offer unlimited plans for $10 more ($79.99 and 109.99) They could have even picked a middle ground between AT&T's two tiered Data plans and then told you "Hey if you go over your automatically bumped up to the $10 data plan" Sprint did this a while back on talk plans where if you went over your minutes instead of being charge a fee for each minute you were bumped up to the next plan level even if it was ONE minute.

The only true MISTAKE Sprint made was the way they wrote out the "EVO TAX" it shouldn't be device specific and they shouldn't be saying that I am going to consume more Data being an EVO owner than if I were a Hero or Moment or Blackberry user....

Tell all your loyal customers they can keep their current plan as long as they don't upgrade to a new phone...... Then you have to decide do you want to go to a capped data plan or pay $10 more a month to get a new phone (no matter the phone) and get unlimited data... AT&T is doing it with their data plans and it's NOT iPhone specific... It's going to piss a ton of heavy iPhone users but they didn't pick on a specific customer/phone... Smart move on AT&T's part... Even though we all know it was directed to the iPhone that is only 10% of their customers but eat up 80% of their data...

Yes you can choose your minutes and if they would have done it the way I stated you would be able to choose your data plan too.... But still offering an unlimited option would be better than what AT&T is offering right now.

All that being said I went from an unlimited AT&T plan with an iPhone and unlimited text that was running me $120+ a month after taxes. With Sprint I am on the 450 minute plan because of the any mobile any time thing they have because looking at my bill I spend 90% of my phone time talking to other mobile phones.. So now I am paying almost half what I was paying on AT&T to basically get the same thing...... So for guys like me making a switch even with the $10 I am getting a STEAL of a DEAL.... In my first week on Sprints plan I have used only 30 "Land Line" minutes and 144 mobile minutes which are unlimited.... So I am on pace for 120 "Any time Minutes" and will probably push 500 - 600 any mobile any time minutes....

They may not be able to do either Financially. If they can not afford to put up towers, or give the service they have been given.

They either have to

  • A) Charge people more money
or

  • B) Remove the service/towers and not offer them.

They can't give you the service without charging you more, they don't have the Finances for it

you getting the service of the evo
pay more for less phone and service elsewhere

i dont like the $10 tax myself but it is the price i pay for the phone i have.

No, it isn't cheaper for everyone. I'm no fan of ATT but if I was going with them I'd be happy because most of my data is used on a WIFI network, and I never use texting (I use a separate app). That means for me, all I'd need to pay is the 39 bucks for 450 mins, which rollover if I dont use them all in a month, and then 15 bucks for 200meg of data (I checked my data usage for the past 6 months and the most I used was 45 off of 3g, with a ton more over wifi obviously). So for me, thats 55 bucks minus my employers discount (23 percent) plus the stupid taxes, which is a huge difference over 80 bucks for Sprint. I like that things are more ala carte at ATT. It prevents me from having to pay for things I have no interest in.

I'll be much happier when ATT gets a better selection of Android phones though.

I was on T-Mobile with a Nexus One for 3 months... Their deals are awesome specially if you pay cash for your phone and use the Even More Plus plans.. Problem for me is A. where I live I got ZERO 3G service and B. I travel for a living and in those 3 months I spent probably half my time on the road in "Roaming - Emergency calls only" and that was totally unacceptable.... Now if you live, work and play full time in a decent sized city with great 3G coverage they are impossible to beat. If your in one of their HSPA+ areas... OH LORD.. Hold on to your hats.... That network is FAST!!!!!! but like Sprints 4G/WiMax very limited.....

You get what you pay for.... Sprint has a 50 times larger 3G footprint over T-Mobile and Sprint weather you want to believe it or not is the second largest 3G provider in the US.... Nearly twice the size of AT&T based on the # of people covered........

some of us make our living on the road and depending on someone else's wifi is not an option, i am glad that works great for you!

Apparently my information was wrong so I deleted this post.

If I was on the road as much as you, I'd bump up to 2g of data or unlimited, which would still put my bill 10-15 dollars under the EVO bill on Sprint simply because of that 4G tax.

If it's not a 4G tax, then I can assume all the other smart phones on Sprints network are being bumped up 10 dollars a month too, right? I haven't bothered to check, so I'm sorry if I'm wrong and everyone else is paying this extra 10 bucks a month now too. If they're not, then there's absolutely no doubt its a 4G tax.
