explore feature on Google maps missing?

I've seen the explore feature on Google maps on other devices but mine does not seem to have one. I don't find any of the pictured cards like "eat" or "sleep", and in fact I do not even have an explore tab to go to when I tap the empty search bar. Is this some kind of bug or am I just doing it wrong?

I have the same issue. I read somewhere that it is location based.

try to clear data/cache of google maps and open it again. maybe its a bug. also updated the maps to latest

You're not talking about Latitude, are you ? Its gone, the functionality is rolled into Google Plus now.

In Canada we don't get the fancy big explore tab with pictures. When you click on the search bar we get this:

I get the same thing in Florida. Like I said, I read somewhere it may be location based as in it only comes up in bigger cities. Someone posted somewhere about it saying it popped up in a bigger city that he visited, but not where he lives.

Any updates on this? Not working for me here in Ireland either. I have a Samsung Galaxy S3.

What's annoying is that Google Local which worked fine, was removed; supposedly replaced by Google Explore (or Google Services) but I have neither Local nor Explore. Is there any alternative?

Same with Copenhagen, Denmark. I get it, if I zoom in on New York (laahh deh daaah)

[Edit]: Can it have anything to do with Zagat's services?

[Update]: After surfing around a bit, I think it is directly related to Google-owned Zagat. TyBec, you do get it in Canada, but only in Zagat covered Toronto. As well does London UK.

I feel confident enough to conclude, that Zagat is the key here.

I have samsun galaxy s3 and have explore , places and location options missing. I just can search the directions. I do not think this is location specific as others in same location as me using Samsung phones have this. Mine is the jelly bean upgraded one and I suspect this for the goof -up
