I have looked through the Stratosphere threads and also through the Android store...where is the best place to purchase an extended life battery. I am shopping for my g/f. Not necessarily the cheapest but reliable....The android store does not reference the Stratosphere directly but I have heard this phone is exactly like some other phone. Thanks in advance.

Last I checked, Verizon's corp stores and their website had the extended battery for $25. (50% off)... that is where most people are getting them.

The product page may say $49.99, but you have to add to cart before it shows the discount.

(EDIT: checked now, its still on sale)

ok, thanks for the scoop...we actually bought the phone at Costco, so I will check there first and then go to the local corporate store.

Is the extended battery the same size as the original? I got my Strat on Saturday and picked up the hard shell and holster combo. Basically I'm wondering if I'll need a new case.

I have the official extended battery that I purchased through Verizon, and they are not the same size. When you buy an extended battery you are also given a new battery cover to compensate for the battery being bigger.

I personally just bought my wife and I a TrexCell 4000mah extended battery they were only 18.99 a piece and had free shipping on Amazon. I have noticed a tremendous increase in battery life, I have actively used my strat with many heavy apps all day to test it and results were great! I only went from 100% down to 65% and that was with all brightness up, bluetooth on, wifi on, and gps on too, as well as really playing a few games on it too. I have been satisfied thus far. The best part is that I have rooted mine, but left my wife's at stock just in case, lol but She has seen a great increase as well. The reason hers depleted a little quicker than mine is because of all the apps and bloatware that she runs in the background like facebook, live wallpaper, and all her other social and misc. apps (i.e. junk, :))

I have the verizon extended battery. I think it is 3500 mah compared to your TrexCell 4000mah.

I'm wondering if that Trexcell will fit in the same fat-back cover as the original Verizon extended battery.

The biggest problem that I have found is that there are VERY few, if any, cases that cover the phone once you install the extended battery.

For me, I use a zippered camera case that clips to my belt... bought at Best Buy. At first I was annoyed that I could not find a good phone case, but now I like the fact that the camera case totally protects the phone... I can work out in the yard with it... get dirty... drop the cased phone.... and no problems.

After seeing the discussion here, I checked and found the extended battery + special back cover on sale at 50% off ($24.99) at a local Verizon store. I asked about cases (I don't use one now, but I might want to), and they did have one that was made for the larger form factor with the extended battery. I wonder if maybe more will become available as more people buy the battery.

And at this price, I think it's a great, great buy. I only got it today, and it came with about a 40% charge, so I can't comment on how long it lasts yet. (See DemoManMLS's post and replies to it here. But it definitely changes the feel of the phone. My opinion: it adds some weight and bulk, but this wasn't a light phone to begin with. I think it fits my hand better with the extended battery, but of course that's going to vary from one person to another. I also think it makes the physical keyboard more solid and stable for typing, which I like.

I'll report on battery life experience after I charge it up tonight and use it over the next day or two.

One question, though: Now that I have two batteries, what's the best way to store the one I'm not using -- fully charged or fully drained? Or does it matter?

Thanks for posting about the battery! I would store it however it is now...you can always charge it if you need to switch! I think they make a charger for the battery alone. I had one when I had a Droid X.

Yes, the battery-only charger is here. It actually comes with a standard battery, which would give me 3 batteries -- overpreparedness, even for me. :) I also wonder if it would hold the extended battery, but based on the picture, maybe it would if you left the lid open.

A follow-up report on battery life with the extended battery: I charged it to 100% as of about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. It is now 8:30 a.m. Friday, 58 hours later, and the charge stands at 12%, low enough to get warnings from the phone to charge it, which I'm going to do.

Obviously this includes two overnights when I was not using the phone at all. I don't do any game playing or very much music streaming (and no video streaming during this particular time period). OTOH, I do leave the Bluetooth and GPS turned on all the time, even overnight, just to avoid having to remember turning them on when I go out. I do spend a fair amount of time on Wikipedia and other Web browsing, a newspaper-reading app, and Google maps. The phone requested to go into power-saving mode when the battery reached 20% earlier this morning, but I declined that for the sake of the testing.

Of course everyone's phone use and experience will be different, but 58 hours to go from 100% to 12% seems pretty good to me.

I got mine for pretty cheap through the Verizon store. But in that phone, definitely needs an extended battery for moderate to heavy use. The regular battery did not do it for me.

Unless you use your phone a lot, why would you want an extended battery that makes an already heavy, thick phone even heavier and thicker? I don't use my phone all that much and have about 30% of battery remaining after about 15 hours.

The thickness is a stinker. I get used to it, but when I handle someone else's phone, I notice it.

However, I use my phone much like a notebook computer....or a netbook. Meaning, thanks to the strat and this battery, I can leave my computer at home... carrying only that chubby little phone on my hip.... and, unlike most computers... the phone can go all day with heavy use.

I am re-buying my stratosphere tomorrow even though I could buy any android currently available.... that extended battery, the low power demands of the low spec device, the keyboard, and the great screen: It is still the only one that has all of those features.
