External barcode scanner?

Any tips or experiences with using an external (handheld) barcode scanner with a Pixel Slate or similar tablet?

Get one that has a USB Type C connector (and an OTG adapter if it isn't wired to do OTG itself). A barcode scanner's output looks, to the computer, like the output of a keyboard, with "Enter" being added after the alphanumeric of the barcode, so it's just like adding an external USB keyboard.
