external hdd on a tab a 2016

Need some advice we have with working with an external hdd.
I've got it working with ES file Explorer I can see the external drive and open files with it but when it comes to saving files that's a bigger issue.

Word doesn't see the drive, and when I try to copy a file across it comes up with saying this is an unsupported action this also happens with trying to move a file any advice please.

What format is the drive in? If it's NTFS you likely can't write to that from your tablet. You'll need it to be FAT32.

Also - I avoid ES File Explorer. I used to use that but moved to Solid Explorer when ES started to bring unwanted add-ons.

exFAT works with most Android devices and allows larger file sizes than FAT32.
