Extreme battery drain in cold weather

Had a look around and could not find anything in this so thought I'd post. Have had this happen a couple times in the last month and only with Lollipop. I go out for a walk on a cold prairie day (-20 C) with headphones in and Nexus 5 in my coat pocket and my battery will drain from 90% to 5% in under an hour, often times just turning off. Today I only had music playing but in the past I'll have both music and RunKeeper or Runtastic going as well. Only seems to happen in colder weather...
Any idea what's going on?

Edit: I should also mention that it will charge back up to 100% in about a half hour afterwards.

Battery University - How to Prolong Lithium-based Batteries - look at the left panel for discharge temperature info.

It's probably below zero in your coat pocoet, so th phone shouldn't even be there, because the battery might be getting below its storage temperature (which is lower than the lowest temperature it should be used at). And when you bring it inside, the condensation from the relatively moister air can cause water damage inside the phone. (The source doesn't matter - condensed water or water from a bath in a lake is the same.)

Put the phone into an inside pocket (like your shirt) or modify an underarm holster to hold the phone where it's warm. Electronics built to be used in -20 environments doesn't include cellphones or lithium batteries. (And it's not as cheap as a case of Note 4s.)
