Extreme noob wants to root

Hi there, I've been reading up on rooting for a few weeks now and Im ready. The problem, I am utterly clueless.... I was trying to back everything up onto my computer and I don't even know how to do that! I mean, in theory I know. I plugged phone into the computer, opened a new folder on computer and copied everything (I think) from my phone to the computer.

I've downloaded the drivers and the file for rooting. However I kept getting error messages. So I tried to uninstall everything, and I can't. Its asking for a password? what on earth?

lost...any help would be great.

Haha I was a complete noob as well, I actually got froyo on my phone, if you are looking to do that hit me up I can try to teach u. Aim me or google chat me or sumthing

To further assist you. Give us some info on what baseband, kernel, and build number you are running.

All of your logistics are covered in this post. I would say follow droidXcon's how to root guide, make sure you load up CWM, and then flash to DL09. For details please see the link.
