Could this be due to poor signal, or an app running in the background?

9.5 hrs off battery with what looks to be a good chunk of screen time and 8% battery loss. You have nothing to complain about, that is very good.

It's not bad, but I often get like .25% discharge per hour when my phone is idle with email and various games syncing. In airplane mode I got 12.5 hours the other day and only lost 1%.

I must have deleted the snapshot from the other day, but I usually unplug my phone on the middle of the night and it will be idle for 4-5 hours before I wake up.

The battery will usually be 98%-99%.

One thing I've noticed in particular with this phone though ; if the signal is poor, it seems to lose battery particularly fast.

I concur - I get terrible signal at work (though my signal strength is much better than it was with my Galaxy S3 I should say...I actually get 4g at work now) and the terrible signal can chew your battery down. There is a stark difference between my battery drain at work and my drain at home with 4-5 bars.

That's true for every phone. When the signal is poor, the phone directs more power to the antenna to try to hold the signal.

I'm aware that every phone will discharge faster when is searching or attempting to maintain a signal, but on this phone it seems particularly pronounced.

It's possible that this is due to the contrast of normally getting such phenomenal battery life when the signal is solid.

I'm coming off a Bionic, which had weak battery life overall, but the difference in drain as it related to poor signal did not seem as drastic as it does with my Maxx.

Quick question...

Is that also the case with wifi; that if the signal keeps going in and out, it will speed up battery loss?

I've not seen tests of this so I don't know for sure, but it seems as if this would be the case. I'm in a place with poor mobile coverage for the weekend and my phone was losing 6% per hour last night just sitting in my pocket, despite a good wifi connection. A bad mobile signal can make a huge impact on battery, that's for sure.
