Extremely slow Gallery - perhaps need to clear out the SD card?

I'm trying to help a friend solve a problem with his Casio G's One running Android 2.3. One issue is that it takes a really long time to open his Gallery - like 3 or 4 minutes or more.

I suspect it's because his 8 GB SD card has several GB of photos he's downloaded. Perhaps they are not organized into sub-folders, so it's just taking a long time to open because it has to read a really big list. Could that be the problem?

If so, what's a good solution? Hooking it up via USB to a computer and using Android File Transfer to create sub-folders and organize things better?

What do you mean by that?

I was able to mount his Android phone on my Mac via USB and see that there are over 12,000 image files he downloaded over the last 2 years. I'm guessing the slowness comes from taking a long time to gather the info to list the directory.

I just backed up all the files on my Mac. Can I make sub-folders in his downloads area on his SD card and organize them by month, thus greatly reducing the number of items in any one folder? And if so, would that speed things up?

Well, I installed Clean Master and ran through the cache cleaning. That went very quickly. And I cleared out the trash, which deleted like 12,000 items. But his gallery is just taking forever to open. I added back one folder to "download" contain just his images from August (about 200 files), but it seems to want to take forever to "read in new images." I don't know what it's reading. Maybe creating thumbnails?

I'm thinking that maybe he shouldn't keep so many images on his phone, regardless of the fact that he has an 8 GB SD card, and should use something like Box to store them if he needs to look at them.

Is there a problem with these Android devices when there are lots of files for the gallery on an SD card?
